Hi folks,

Two days ago I picked up a Barons Pale Ale kit with all the equipment required. I followed the instructions but may have added the yeast in at a little too high of temperature (80F). The temperature kept rising after that so I put my primary fermentation bucket in a cold bath and it lowered the temp which now sits at about 65F. Will the initial high temp. While adding the yeast ruin the beer? Also it's starting the fermentation and looks like a light brown with some dark green? Could this be the hops pellets? I can post a picture tomorrow. Thanks for you help everyone!

It is likely hop trub, don't worry about color. Pitching at 80F isn't ideal but how long did it sit at 80F and how high did it rise? How long was it sitting above 80F is really what you want to watch. An hour or so, I would not worry. A day or so, I would think you may get some esters but it may work for a pale.

Right now just let it ride. Let it sit in primary for 2 weeks at least, even if that is not what the kit says to do. Take a reading in about 7 days, if you want, and then wait another week, take another gravity reading. If it seems done, wait another day and take another reading. If it is still at the same gravity then it is done and ready for bottling.

Thanks for your response! It only sat at 80F for about an hour then I was able to cool it down and placed it into my basement where it is 65F. So even if I check the gravity in a couple days or two and if it is at correct levels I shouldn't rack it to the secondary yet?
