Hi all,

My first brew (John Palmer's Cincinatti Pale Ale) isn't showing any bubbles in the airlock after 48 hours. (I rehydrated the yeast, which was showing signs of activity, before pitching). There are a couple of inches of foamy stuff on surface so looks like something is happening, but should I be concerning about no airlock activity?

Any pointers most appreciated.

You have krausen... You don't need no stinking bubbles...

The airlock is not a reliable gauge of fermentation... As long as you have other indicators of activity, you don't need to work about the airlock.
 
It could mean that your fermenter isn't sealed completely, so the CO2 is taking the easy way out, instead of through the airlock.

It's not a big deal for things like pale ales since they don't need to sit for extended aging.

For things that need to go into secondary or need extended aging a good seal is more important. But as long as CO2 is being produced, you're good.
 
Thanks people. It is a brand new 3 gallon Young's bucket. Seal feels tight. Scum and condensation on lid is present which I hear is a good sign.
