Today, my dad and I started on our first batch of beer, the Irish Red Ale kit from northernbrewer.com.

I took some pictures to document our journey...join me:

The supplies are all in order.

Me with the bag of grains and our beer of choice for the day: Palmetto Amber

Wort, pre-malt extract

We were very pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of the ice-water bath method of cooling the wort...it was down to about 80 degrees in around 15 minutes

In the primary, all ready to go

We had an OG of 1.042, so we're all set. It was a really fun time and we're deciding on what our next brew will be already!

Holy heck,

I have worked in commercial bakery with a smaller sink
From the pictures the place looks really nice

Welcome to HBT

here's a little update...one week in and we took our second hydrometer reading... it went from 1.042 to 1.011, and it tastes pretty great. Anybody have any idea how to figure abv from the hydrometer readings?

If I had a sink that big I wouldn't have needed to get a chiller....:ban:

Hi:

I am just getting ready to bottle today my first brew, a Hefe Weizen from Northern Brewer, but have the Irish Red on deck with a Cincinnati Cream Ale and a Scottish 80. Which yeast did you use for your Irish Red? So far I used Wyeast German Wheat for the Hefe, am going to use Wyeast again on the Cream Ale, will switch to White Labs for the Scottish 80, but haven't decided on the Irish Red.

I was really happy with my stuff from Northern Brewer. Although I will be getting my yeasts from LHBS and when I go all grain perhaps that stuff, I am just tickled pink with NB. I am even going to do a wine kit soon for Mom in preparation for Christmas as a gift (she's quite the wine lush). I went with the premium kit (The one step down from kegs). Two glass carboys, all the fixens and 7 1/2 stainless pot with immersion chiller, but I see you have no need of a chiller :).

How long do you plan on bottle conditioning your Red?

Cheers,:mug:

honestly, I forget what the yeast was...Whichever kind of dry yeast Northern Brewer recommends with thier Irish Red kit. We ordered their Cream Ale kit for our next brew too...

We are bottling this Thursday (a little early, I know) and we're going to Bottle condition for about three weeks...It's only really the two of us drinking, so by the time we get to our last bottles they will be quite old.

We don't really have a LHBS where we are (as far as I can tell), so we've been using Northern Brewer.

I just bottled my AG Irish Red kit from Northern Brewer. That stuff tasted SO GOOD! Even without carbonation, it was delicious! It sat in primary for about 30 days (I sorta forgot about it).

I am figuring 3 - 4 weeks in the bottle then move to beer fridge for mass consumption! We are bottling the AG Cream Ale tomorrow afternoon and we will see how it turned out! Northern Brewer was great for ordering kits! I have ordered from them and Austin Homebrew Supply and both have had great service, quick delivery and quality ingredients!

Oh, and you will be surprised how quickly that beer will disappear! My first batch lasted about 2 weeks and it was gone! Keep the pipeline filled!

Cute dog!

A question you all of you:

I am pretty nervous about bottle bombs...Is it a good idea to store bottles in a metal trash can or something while they're conditioning? Or am I just being too worried? I would hate for anyone to get hurt, you know.

EDIT CONCERNING THE DOG: thanks a lot, but she smells really bad all of the time.

What is the gravity of this brew right now ?
It has only been 11 days you beer pedophile!
But I think you should be ok the was a low gravity brew to start so 11 days should be enough time to get the gravity down to a safe level for bottling !
I would still measure the gravity wed and thurs to make sure it doesn't change
