Brewed AHS Anniv. Hefeweizen yesterday and thought it went pretty well. I did the extract and steeped 1/2 lb of german pilsner malt and 1/2 lb of Red Wheat. I then boiled my 7 lb of Wheat Extract which I should have kept upside down, gooy stuff! 60min boil with bittering hops and then pitched the yeast!

All in all I thought it went pretty well. I REALLY want a propane burner now:rocking:. AHS approximated their S.G. to be 1.051 and I got 1.053. I think that should be ok and I will check it in a week or so. They estimate final S.G. to be 1.013.

Cleaned with PBW and sanitized with StarSan prior to batch!

Awesome! Congrats on your first batch! Yeah, the extract can get gooey! What I like to do is fill my kitchen sink up with warm water then add the extract can to it while steeping to soften it up.

Welcome to the addiction... err... i mean hobby! :D

thanks! i may need to try that sink method.I also may sanatize the whole container and just dump it in the wort.

I keep a ladle handy (sanitized of corse) and put some of the water from my kettle in the extract cans and swish to get that last bit left in there. Use an oven mitt when you do though. 212deg water is a bit warm. ;)

I usually warm a sauce pan full of water to about 75F and then pop the unopened extract can into it while I'm bringing the water to a boil. BTW, DME is less expensive and has more gravity points per pound than LME. Also, after I pour the extract out I put about 6 OZ of warm water from the boil kettle into the container, cover and swich once or twice. Don't want to let any of that malty goodness go to waste!!!

i plan to use DME next time, since this was my first run I just went with initial suggestions from AHS. Do i need to sanatize everthing going into the wort if its at 200 degrees F?

i am thinking the higher specific gravity reading came from the yeast starter. this was a pill that i put in at the 45 min mark. figured wasent neccesary but why waste it?
