Hoping for some feed back on my first all grain recipe. only able to do 3 gallon batches. Plugged this info into Brewers Friend and this is what I got.

3 Gallon Batch

154 F Mash (60 Minutes)
OG 1.078
FG 1.022
US 05
IBU 72.2

7.5# 2 Row
.5# Honey Malt
.5# Flaked Wheat

.5 oz Centennial FWH
.5 oz Tettenager FWH (left over from last batch)
.5 oz Cascade 20 Minute
.5 oz Centennial 10 Minutes
.5 oz Cascade 10 minutes
1 oz Cascade Whirlpool
1 oz Centennial Whirlpool

Tear it apart :)

Cheers

I think it looks pretty good overall. 3 things that caught my eye:

1.) Final gravity of 1.022 is pretty high. Gonna be very "sweet". Not sure if you are shooting for that, or your software just spit that number out. You want a lower gravity than that. One thing that will help with a drier beer is to mash at a lower temp - 150-152 rather than 154.

2.)Personal preference - I am not a big fan of Honey malt. A half pound in 3 gallons would be noticeable. If you do like it, go for it. Just my preference. I would use something like Cara20 maybe.

3.) you could throw in some (1-2 ounces) cascade for a dry hop for 3-4 days at the end of ferementation if you wanted.

Overall though, I think it looks like a simple, straightforward, good beer. #2 and #3 are probably more preference things. #1 though - finishing gravity - you don't want a 1.022 IPA.

I agree, mash lower to get more fermentable sugars and a drier beer. Also what yeast do you plan on using?

I think a lot of the suggestions above are great. Yeast choice makes a differencewith IPAs. Some yeasts mute the hop perceptions and others enhance it, US-05 is a good choice, I think.

I'd consider changing your hop schedule to include dry hopping as suggested above, as well as add 15 and 5 minute additions.

Thanks everyone for the input.

I think I will mash at 149-152 F. The FG is just what the software spit out at me.

I have been wondering about replacing the honey malt. Just sounded like having a honey taste would be nice :)

How does this look for an updated hop schedule?

.5 oz Centennial 10AA FWH
.5 oz Tettnanger 4.5AA FWH
.5 oz Cascade 7AA 20 minute
.5 oz Centennial 10AA 10 minute
.5 oz Cascade 7AA 10 minute
1 oz Cascade 7AA Whirlpool (30 Minute @ 180 F)
1 oz Centennial 10AA Whirlpool (30 Minute @ 180 F)

I think it looks like a nice beer. Brew it up, take notes and then rebrew it with any changes you want the next time around.

Honey malt, in my experience, does not taste like honey. It tastes like a ..... i don't know, a cloying sweetness.

I only use it in one beer - my scottish 70, and I use 4 ounces in 6.5 gallons.... and it gives the beer a subtle sweet edge to it. A little goes a long, long way.

I used Honey Malt in a Hefe I just tasted last night and am not sure I like it. Still trying to develop my pallet so not sure if its the Honey Malt or something else... Thinking I will move to SMaSH after this IPA
