didn't even plan on brewing it tonight, but i couldn't bear seeing a new bucket and grain just sitting there...
planned on making a maris otter/cascade SMaSH (3 gallons, stovetop boil)
6lb maris otter, 3oz cascade pellets (us-05 yeast but that doesn't really figure into my questions)
used some online calculators and was told to use 2g mash water, 4g sparge

mash in ended up being 2.5g to get the temp up to 151F
first runnings: 1g 1.077 (all hydrometer readings corrected for temperature)

had to sparge in two batches because of mash tun capacity:

1st batch: 2g 181F 10 minute rest
runnings came out at 1.034

2nd batch 1.5g 165F maybe ~5 minute rest
runnings came out at 1.017

total preboil wort was a little over 5g at 1.041

post boil a little over 3g at 1.058 (added ~0.5g boiled, cooled water to get closer to 1.049 target OG [ended up 1.051])

ran numbers through some online calculator and it said i got over 89% efficiency... can this be right?
regardless i'm excited to have another beer in the pipeline!
(also the SWMBO said i was like a scientist when she wandered into the kitchen)
anyway, thanks for whoever read through all this! :mug: :tank:

I just used beercalculus.hopville.com to calculate this, but I got 76% efficiency with 6lbs of Maris Otter (assuming 38ppg for something like Crisp Maris Otter) for a 3 gallon batch. So, if you had a little more than 3 gallons you'd have gotten slightly higher than 76% efficiency. So, I'm not sure where that 89% efficiency came from.
