Do finings really help ? I remember 40 years ago using them regularly but forget if they done any good
 
At the advise of a fellow HBT member I used gelatin in my kolsch this summer. Beer turned out crystal clear. I just brewed a pale ale and not so clear. I know it will clear in time, but getting crystal clear beer right away was a treat. I will probably use it more often.
 
I Whirlfloc last 15 minutes s of boil and I'll cold crash the beer and then throw in the gelatin. 48 hours later I keg and crystal clear beer goes into the keg.
 
I’m new to trying to get clear beer just got some recipes down and can reproduce now working on clearing. I add whirlfloc last 10 min of book and cold crash In my stand up freezer. When it get down to 30ish on the sticker temp I instantly keg force in fridge. What type of gelatin, how much, and when to add to ferm

I dont use kegs, fridges etc, my plan is to only put my bottles in a fridge 2 hours before drinking. I dont like ale too chilled
 
As others have stated I always throw in a whirfloc with 10 minutes left. I have tried gelatin and biofine clear and have found that the biofine works better on the type of beers I brew (Ales). Biofine is a bit more expensive but i split a bottle with a couple other homebrewers, plus the convenience makes it worth it to me.

Its only ales and bitters I am doing at the minute, My first brew which I didn't use finings is quite clear after 6 days in the bottle and tastes fine so I'm not sure about extra expenses. I only use beer its and not really in to boiling and stuff
 
I'm interested in this as well. I usually rely on cold crashing to get suspended yeast out, but I'd love to get it to drop before I keg. I have Biofine, but it didn't seem to do it for me, though I only tried once. This is ~ 3 weeks after brewing and the yeast was no longer active, just still suspended / not flocculated. American Ale 1056.
 
I have had good results with Knox unflavored gelatin. I cold crash in the fermenter for one day, then add the gelatin solution and let it sit for another day or two before bottling or kegging.

For my 2 gallon batches I've been using 1/4 tsp of gelatin dissolved in 1/4 cup of water.
 
I always follow the Brulosophy method with Knox Unflavored Gelatin and it works great.

1. Chill the beer to 50F or below.
2. Combine 1/2 tsp of gelatin with 1/4 cup of cool water, do not stir.
3. Microwave in 7 second bursts, stirring with a thermometer each time.
4. Continue microwaving until 145F - 150F.
5. Add this mixture to the cold beer and let it sit for 2-3 days.

That's it. The first pint or two are usually garbage, all the gelatin will come out in that. I dump the first 2 pints and then good to go.
