I have been plagued by poor efficacy ever since I went to all grain. My 1st ever all grain batch was a 67% efficacy using store crushed grains. Then I went to a corona grain mill with mods and was never able to get above 65%. Today I just hit 84.5% Fantastic JUMP and I could not be happier. :ban:

Things I learned....read read read read. That was my first mistake, I read the forums and got the "idea" on how to go all grain.

The second thing I learned....crush till you are scared..then crush a little more. I was always under the impression that there should be no flour when rushing...well with the corona...there will be flour and that is ok. You want the husks of your grains split and a bit frayed.

The third thing is I was spargeing too fast...just above a trickle. The other change I made is since I am doing batch spareing 2 infusions of the rinse water give or take being equal parts.

For all those having issues...stick in there. You are just most likely missing something simple.

Congrats! I did my 1st AG the other day and look forward to getting better efficiency. I did the batch sparge twice and that got me 68%. I had store crushed grains too. Can't wait to get me a mill of my own :)

Just make to stir the heck out of the mash after each sparge addition. Then vorlauf again for a couple minutes to settle the grain bed. This little trick gained 5% efficiency in my system.
