I accidently left the brew belt on when I put the insulating blanket around my fermenting batch of ale. Temp got above 80 before turned off brew belt and took blanket off. So what is the worst that can happen? Is the batch definitely ruined, or just maybe ruined, or maybe not as good as it might have been. I guess I won't really know until I taste it, but wondering of others have had a similar experience, and what was the result.

How early or late in the fermentation was it? If it was above 80 at the start of fermentation, expect rocket fuel. If it was a few days in, you may be fine. I made a red IPA which hit 85 on the first few days and it was my worst batch ever. No matter how long I let it age, the rocket fuel taste never disappeared or faded. However, you will never know until you let it finish fermenting and try it.

Your fermentation may have been far enough along for the yeast to just have produced a few stronger esters instead of fusel alcohols. Wait a week to take a SG sample. Let the beer go a full three weeks or more if the sample doesn't give you an immediate killer headache.

I made a batch of black IPA which fermented at an ambient temp of about 76-77 degrees. The beer tastes pretty bad... I used sa05 for that one. I bottled it in hopes that the mini fermentation to carbonate the beer would help clean things up a little bit. It's been bottled for a month or so now and it's still pretty bad. I'm not going to give up on it though... Maybe after another month or so in the bottle it'll age out a bit more.
I'd just ride it out... bottle it up and move on to the next batch. Hopefully in a few months it'll clear up a bit. Good luck!
