Why is it that when fermentation starts thier is a nice white foam on top of my brew and after 1 week it is all gone, and thier is just a brownish ring around the top of my fermenter
 
you must be new. the foam is whats called karusen. as the yeast eat the sugars in the wart they produce alcohol and CO2. the CO2 of course bubbles to the top. the proteins and what not in the brew chat cause head retention also produce foam during fermentation. as fermentation progresses the CO2 production slows and eventually stops. with no more CO2 bubbling up through the brew there is no more foam production.

the brownish ring as you call it is hops resin, dried wart, and dead yeast that got stuck to the side of the carboy during fermentation.
 
all questions are stupid. unless you already know the answer before you asked. then you got to wonder why someone asked if they already knew the answer.
 
No such thing as a stupid question. Especially if you weren't familiar with the term krausen, it would be hard to search for something like that. I would, however, recommend you take a look at How to Brew, by John Palmer. It is a great book, tons of useful knowledge for the beginner, and it's available free online.
