i am fairly new to brewing, just did an extract brew that says 4 days in primary and 4-7 in secondary. does that seem short to anyone.
 
Yes that seems short... buuuut not impossible (you'll read/figure that out later). Assuming this is a kit with dry yeast I would wait a minimum of 7 days and start taking gravity readings for three days to see if things are stable. It seems most folks around here primary for 7 to 14 days and the majority (could be wrong here) don't bother with a secondary. I don't really like to type so.... use the search function and look at the stickies (https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/faq-please-read-before-asking-question-7909/) for new brewers and you should find more than enough info to answer your questions. That being said... don't hesitate to ask any question because there is a tremendous amount of knowledge around here.
