fermentation question

i'm currently on day 5 for my german style extract boil kit and was wondering if hops should be floating to the top still there's this gunk and i'm not sure if it's trub or what that is floating around the the edges on top, but it smells hoppy.

It is krausen. It's supposed to be there for a week or two. Sign of a good fermentation in progress.

Ive noticed with a real vigorous fermentation it will kick stuff up from the bottom if the sediment is loose. I see it all the time. It'll sink back down soon, no biggie.
