Fermentables....options for Dark Ale (master pint kit)

I'm going to be starting a Dark Ale kit on Thursday, I've ordered a kilo of brewing sugar but have seen that a 907 g of golden syrup worked well also on a you tube video. What options for fermentables other than sugar would be reccomended I've also considered half brown sugar and half golden syrup. What would you guys reccomend.

Too much sugar will heavily dry out the flavour and mouthfeel of your beer. While I'm skeptical of the whole "cider" taste from too much sugar people go in about with kits (have been bored and made 50/50 kit/sugar beers before to try out) it does give it less and less beer flavour.
