Just brewed up a Fat Tire clone last night and missed my OG. Calls for 1058 and I was at 1042 before pitching yeast.

From what I've read on other post, it doesn't seem to be a huge deal but I wanted to see if there is anything that I should / could do at this point?

Will this impact my end result?

If your OG is actually 1.042, you will have a very different beer than one with an OG of 1.058, but it is much more likely that your wort was not properly integrated with your top-off water. This is common in extract batches, and nothing to worry about. With extract, it's pretty much impossible to miss your target OG if you are using the proper amount of water.

I was afraid it would be a different beer than what I was after. Durn!

I strained the wort and filled the bucket to the lower rim ( 5 gallon mark on my bucket). Areated the heck out it....twice. Then took a reading directly after areation so it should have been well mixed.

Maybe my water amounts are off a little. I guess I can measure out 5 gallons before the next batch.

Know much about White Labs? I didn't do a starter now I wish I had. It's only been 13 hours but I sure would like to see some activity in my air lock.

unfortunately, even that isn;t always enough to properly mix the wort and water enough to get an accurate hydrometer reading. if this was an extract kit, then you will be at the target OG if your volume is correct, its impossible to be off. in the future, I recommend taking readings before topping off and then calculating the correct OG:
batch OG = post-boil OG * post-boil volume / batch volume

as for the yeast, that is a bit under-pitched and it can take up to 72 hours for fermentation to begin. it'll get there

Let me know how this turns out. I just did an extract Fat Tire Clone tonight (my 2nd batch ever) and ended up with a 1.046 OG. I'm curious how far off the mark it will be.

I was watching the OG as I filled it to my 5 gallon mark and It was at 1.050 at 4.25 gallons. I wasn't sure if I should stop filling there so I just decided to top it off to 5 gallons and see what happened. It dropped to 1.046 by the time I was done.

Hope your batch turns out ok! If it does, that means mine may have a shot :)

Ahh! NECROTHREAD!

But, don't worry, it's actually very unlikely that your extract batch missed target OG by that much. In all likelihood, you just didn't mix the water and wort together throughly when you topped off. It won't matter, as fermentation will mix things properly, but it will screw up your readings. Assuming you used all the ingredients and the proper amount of water, you're pretty much guaranteed to hit your gravities.

Wow! I read the date as 12/2 instead of 2/12. Dyslexia at its finest!!

Temp was 70 when I took my reading. Its possible that I didn't mix water well enough as I was in a hurry to finish it up due to unforeseen circumstances. I'll just wait and see how it goes.

Thanks.

Honestly, when I do extract batches, I don't even bother taking a reading. To get an accurate one, you have to mix more than I'm willing to, and the chances that you're actually off are pretty darn low. I'm sure it's fine :mug:
