I am in the process of upgrading from my 10 gal Igloo cooler MLT to a keggle MLT. My cooler has a 12" domed false bottom that fits perfectly through the hole that I cut in the top of the keg, but does not cover the entire bottom. I plan on direct firing my keggle MLT for temp maintenance and step mashes but I am worried that the grain around the edges of the false bottom will get scorched. I know there are 15 hinged false bottoms on the market but they are a little pricey. I am just trying to avoid buying another one if I dont have to. Anybody have experience direct firing a MLT keggle with a 12 cooler false bottom?
