Every single ISP does this. Read your service agreement and terms and conditions. How do you think people get caught for trafficking kiddie porn? Or content that gets you looked at for Patriot Act stuff.

they suck!! (ISP) Why don't they just prevent traffic to these sites?

No you didn't strike a nerve. It's pathetic to me that the majority of our society's children sent disciplined and you see the results. We have parents too wrapped up in their own lives to take the time to raise their children right and teach them to be respectful and how to act. I get tired of seeing kids completely disrespect their parents and adults in general. I'm tired of seeing these snot nosed kids throw fits when they don't get what they want. I'm tire of seeing parents not yeah their kids to have any kind I work ethic or discipline at all.

You are way out of line. I have a 2 year old who isn't even old enough to really understand how punishment of practically any kind works. Spanking is a last means to get their attention when they don't respond to anything else. How dare you accuse me of abusing my child.

I'm done with this. My apologies for my part in derailing this thread.

I wholeheartedly agree. I teach at a post secondary school and the lack of discipline that most of our young students have is ridiculous. It's called the entitlement generation for a reason. When you get a trophy for last place in tee ball that doesn't help to set you up for real life.

Here's a thought...

1. Take away her internet rights while at home. If she has a laptop, block it's MAC address on your router from going online, at all (block the wireless and wired addresses). If it's a desktop, remove the NIC, or block those MAC addresses too.

2. Have her get her own internet service into her room. Have her pay for it completely. Then when she gets the notice about being shut off for being a clueless pirate, it doesn't impact you. I would still do #1 to make sure she doesn't piggy-back onto your internet service when that happens.

3. Kick her out... At 20, unless she's going to college close to where you are, and lives at home for that, it's time for her to leave the nest.

I don't have any kids of my own, but saw how my sister and brother-in-law raised my niece and nephew. They caved on so many things when the kids were young that it was disgusting. Things that our parents would never have allowed us to do, were allowed. Or, my sister would discipline the kids, only to have my brother-in-law negate it. Right there at the dinner table too, so the kids knew that if they didn't like what mommy said, daddy would probably remove that punishment. NOT a good thing to do IMO. You need to be of the same mind when disciplining your children. If one parent gives a punishment, the other should not negate it. It gives very bad signals to the children if you do.

As for punishments... My father only hit me once... Once... I really deserved it, and I never did anything bad enough after that to warrant it again. He hit me just one time, but that was enough. Today, if a parent does that, the state gets involved... It's NOT abuse if the kid does something that no other action will convince them how BAD that action was. Also, when growing up, if one of my parents gave a punishment, the other didn't reverse it. At best, I could plead to get the time frame reduced. But it was up to the parent that gave the punishment in the first place.

IMO, kids today have no clue as to what it was like growing up without all the technology we have. They think they're entitled to it, along with tons of other things, that we didn't have growing up. As adults we have to work to keep what we have, and/or get better things. So many kids don't understand that, or simply don't care. Disgusting...

It's illegal and for good reason. We don't need our government controlling what we're allowed to do or see online. As a matter of fact myself as well as several other people just got a few bills dropped from the Senate and the House that would have done just that.

I encourage you to not voluntarily give up your freedoms.

Agreed wholeheartedly. If you choose to let them block things, then soon it's things that are unamerican. Then things they find aren't christian.

You'll have to block or password Internet access forever. The kids are now adults and will have to pay for their own internet service. I'd probably impose my own personal fine on them, too. It would really fry my a$$ to be denied Internet service!!

OP, it's easy for us to make suggestions about your kids. :)

If I lost my internet service because my child was pirating movies via bitorrent (and didn't have enough sense to figure out how the movie industry catches bittorrent thief's :), I'd be pretty pissed. Pissed enough that she/he wouldn't have any internet access in the house and pissed enough that I wouldn't be paying for her phone or any other electronic devices. (At 20, you shouldn't be paying for it anyway.)

Now, we'll see how well I do with my own child (now 9 years old)!

Yeh nice advice moron.
The only one primitive here is yourself if you think hitting children will teach them a lesson. Maybe your dad hit you a bit too hard?

Ooh touchy subject I see, and no, I'm thinking he didn't hit me hard enough for some of the bad things I did. I clearly stated I'm not talking about beating them, but a smack or spanking, I didn't know the youngest was 20 an that wasnt an option now.
I was never abused in any way, and I'm not going to abuse my daughter either. But I feel that discipline is a must for a relationship to work. You may not, and many people now, may not agree with me, but I think for a parent, child relationship, you must have, communication, mutual trust, mutual respect, both must have discipline, love, and being able to compromise when needed helps too.

I've seen kids where they have no form of discipline, no spankings, no groundings, items being confiscated, sent to their room, anything. They stole from their parents, then asked for money immediately after. This kids are rotten to the core, and they needed discipline to show them the guidelines to walk along.

Thales what discipline is to me, it helps guide them, and show them how to do good. There is some leeway to go left or right a little, but no u turns. Just my opinion if my thoughts really offended some people, sorry, it is what it is, and that's just an opinion of a guy.
Hope everything gets sorted out OP! Viel Glück!

Wow. You all scare me. Seriously scare me. Anyone who thinks hitting a 20 year old kid is the right way to teach her the difference between right and wrong is seriously messed up.

I didn't know the youngest was 20 I thought that was the oldest. And again, not beating, just spanking

Sure is nice living in Canada, where internet piracy is merely frowned upon as opposed to illegal.

Lots of interesting posts, for sure. I sure didn't mean to start any fights amongst you folks. I was just blowing off a little steam. The issue is being dealt with in a way we can all live with, and next we'll deal with the ISP as well. Thanks everyone, for your input.

I' In the meantime, I have to write a letter explaining what measures have been taken to remove the illegal files and ensure against repeat violations.

I would be careful writing that letter...
You could just be sending them an admission of guilt.

Tell them you had a virus/Trojan that did it. Tell them you replaced then PC with a TV to prevent the problem.

I'm going to drop this so as not to threadjack, but whichever way you slice it your privacy is being infringed on. Its not legal for a private company to snoop on people

Yes, taking IP addresses that are shown in any torrent program is illegal but stealing movies is not.

Seriously, you pretty much have to download gigs & gigs of stuff for them to notice, so they were probably downloading tons of movies. That'll get you flagged quickly.

Kinda what I was thinking. I have a good friend that has a 2T hard drive just for his music (all pirated) and it is almost full. He has never heard one word from anyone about it.

This is just about right. This is NOT me or my vid.

NM beat me to the vid...post above me...

Also I would MAKE the kids all have their very own Netflix account, that they pay for. $8 a month is better than a lawsuit.

Steve I'd be careful about what you 'admit' to the ISP. It could be used against you down the road.

As for how to deal with your daughter...fire up the pizza oven, take her out back, have her computer sitting next to the oven. After she freaks out...throw her mouse into the oven. Tell her if it happens again...the whole pc goes in...

...that or a horse head in the bed always seems to get the message across.

Sorry to hear it Evets. And it is a shame that your "kid" adult age daughter does not understand or respect the laws. It is unfortunate but she leaves you no choice but to cut her off from internet service in your home, and any other technology that your paying for.

I have a son that is half the age of your daughter and he understands the repercussions to improper internet activities, it will come at a cost. Though we have never had to enforce our policy, we refer it in our household as "going Amish". You get a candle and a book that's it. I figured you would get it considering where you live.:D

As for not admitting to or lying to his ISP, the op has a 20 year old daughter who has proven that IMHO could use "a bite out of the reality sandwich", and it sounds like he has that covered. If he were to lie/ignore the situation, what kind of example do you think he would be setting for his child?

I've only filled up about 1T hard drive with music I've downloaded. Although I've switched ISP's and have used multiple programs to achieve the file size.

I assume with movies as the size is larger the HD would get filled much quicker.

I remember the good ol days of dial up and OG Napster where I would click on 15 songs right before bed to wake up with them all downloaded. Now its click on 15 songs and by the time I'm clicking the 12th song the 1st will already be downloaded.

And I'm all for seeing 20yo getting spanked. Please post video.
