I am experimenting with a few 1 Gallon Batch recipes using BeerSmith 2.0 and have a question about the water volume.

I am curious how much water I should start with to end up with a bottling volume of 1 gallon using the following recipe, a Belgian Tripel.

Grains to Steep:
  • 1.6 oz Wheat Malt, Bel (2.0 SRM) Grain 3 4.9 %
  • 1.6 oz Vienna Malt (3.5 SRM) Grain 2 4.9 %
  • 1.6 oz Pale Malt (2 Row) Bel (3.0 SRM) Grain 1 4.9 %

Boil Ingredients:
  • 3.2 oz Brown Sugar, Light (8.0 SRM) Sugar 4 9.7 %
  • 1.0 oz Corn Sugar (Dextrose) (0.0 SRM) Sugar 5 2.9 %
  • 1 lbs 4.0 oz Extra Light Dry Extract (3.0 SRM) Dry Extract 6 60.7 %
  • 4.0 oz Pale Liquid Extract [Boil for60 min](8.0 SRM) Extract 7 12.1 %
  • 0.25 oz Saaz [4.00 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 8 19.8 IBUs
  • 0.15 oz Fuggles [4.50 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 9 13.4 IBUs
  • 0.15 oz Goldings, East Kent [5.00 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 10 3.0 IBUs
  • 1.00 g Coriander Seed (Boil 5.0 mins)
  • 1.00 g Orange Peel, Sweet (Boil 5.0 mins)

What volume of water should I be using to steep these grains?

I would just steep that small bit of grain in a quart of water

As for the amount of pre-boil volume, that depends on your boil-off rate. Just start with 1.5 gallons. You can top-it back off to 1 gallon at the end of the boil if you are under 1 gallon.
