Hey y'all,

So I just recently got the iDip water tester (used) and ran my first test on my water and I am trying to figure some of this stuff out. Water has always confused me a bit so help if you can!

Tap Water Report
Total Hardness : 85 ppm
Total Alkalinity: 77 ppm
Mag Hardness: 3
Residual Alk CaCO3: 53
SO4: 180
Cl: 163
Ca: 82
Na: 148

So I am trying to input this into my Bru'n water spread sheet but dont know which numbers to use for the bicarb level. Plus when i enter some of the numbers the Bru'n Water calculates my Total and Residual Alk to be way off from what is measured here.

Help!

Thanks!

Do you still need help?

You will need to change the default units of measure on some of the items. In the app select Profile then Preferred Units Of Measure. Change Calcium to ppm as Ca. Chloride to ppm as Cl-. Hardness should be ppm as CaCO3. Magnesium ppm as Mg+2 (I think). Sulfate ppm as SO4.

In Bru'n Water, just below where your numbers go enter your Alkalinity as CaCO3 and pH. This gives you bicarbonate.

My total hardness differed from what Bru'n calculates.

I just got mine so I'm still new to it.

Unfortunately Brun water does not accept alkalinity directly. You must convert this to bicarbonate by 61*alk/50. There's a converter in the program somewhere.

Mag Hardness: 3

Convert to mg/L = (3/50)*12.5

Residual Alk CaCO3: 53

You really don't care about this but it's simply 77 - (82 - 0.5*3)/3.5
SO4: 180
Cl: 163
Ca: 82
Convert to mg/L by 20*82/50

The iDip app lets you set defaults for units. This is an area I'm not sure I have correct in order to use the numbers with Bru'n Water.
Here's how I have mine set:
Total Alkalinity, ppm as CaCO3
Calcium, ppm as CaCO3 (I just noticed this is wrong, should be ppm as Ca)
Chloride, ppm as Cl-
Total Hardness, ppm as CaCO3
Magnesium, ppm as Mg+2
Sulfate, ppm as SO4

The total hardness the app gives me is half what Bru'n water calculates. Not sure if that has something to do with me using the wrong units for Calcium, I'll have to test again.

I fiddled with it a day or two ago. The app seems unreliable; crashes a lot. I expected that so I kept a notepad handy.

Fiddled with Bru'n Water too. I converted the numbers to ppm ion concentration from ppm as CaCO3.

Bumping an old thread because I'm having a problem understanding mine.

I have the brewing test kit ($19) but I don't have Magnesium included in the tests available and I don't have Magnesium test strips. Is there a different test I need to purchase?

No idea what this kit does but magnesium hardness is total hardness minus calcium hardness if it measures those. Then magnesium as the ion (mg/L) is 12.15*Mg_hardness/50.
