So I finally got yesterday's burner problem figured out, left work early to get my brewday going. I planned on leaving at noon, but of course it was quarter to 3 when I left, the wife was late picking me up. I finally got mahsed it, 4 oclock, now it looks like rain!!

This Irish Red was my best extract beer and I'm anxious to get the AG done and into my new (to me) kegs, but it seems all are against me.

The good news, hit mash temp, 152, right on the nose, got a nice glass of brown ale with me. Forecast says no rain, let us hope!!!

Wish me luck!!

Matt

Hopefully the rain hold out. If not just remember your evaporation rate will be very low, maybe even negative! :)

Ann Arbor, MI? I suspect the rain would change the pH of the wort. Best keep it covered.

Remember the brewers secret way to avoid rain!!!! Strip down, dance widdershins around the boil kettle 3 times while flinging whole leaf hops over your left shoulder and chant the following over and over all the way around:

(Don't forget to start the chant with a pause between each word... then speed up with each repetition)
Owah...
Tador...
Kiyam...

:ban: :ban: :ban:

Hope that Helps :drunk:

I think what david means is keep the kettle under cover, like a roof or carport. I would never put a lid on a boil.

Why would you not put a lid on your boil??? I do it all the time. It helps cut down on the amount of boil off plus it helps me regulate my temp and use less gas. Just curious???

Boiling with the cover off your kettle allows the vapors to release out of the wort carrying with it undesirables you don't want in the beer. I covered like you as well with my 1st batch and learned of open kettle boils here. Someone else may have a more scientific response than I...
