Hahaha! Even the head coach is a b*tch.

:mug: All I know is that Asham and Engelland did some b*tch slapping at the end of the game.

Ok, let's try to have a serious discussion. Here's my critical analysis of the Penguins:

The Penguins have not played how they need to play in terms of defense for a number of games now. They are now (after today) at 2.67 goals against/game (17th overall in the league), but that number has gone up because of recent history. Their last 10 games: 6, 3, 5, 5, 2, 8, 1, 4, 3, 2. (3.9 per game. So, their average before the last 10 was quite a bit lower.) If they don't get this straightened out they will be eliminated in the first round. Interestingly, this has happened since Crosby's return. I'm not a coach, but I do watch every game, and I can see how they have been more sloppy on the back check, and more sloppy on passes that result in turnovers. Giving up 5 unanswered goals is just unacceptable for a team that was averaging close to only a couple goals against per game.

I also haven't been happy about the post Crosby return power play. This is nothing against Sid, but is about what was working (pre his return) and what I've seen in the last few weeks. Before, they had Malkin, Neal, Kunitz, Sullivan, and LeTang on the power play. It was doing really well. Sullivan has been an absolute steal for the Penguins in his ability to stick handle and to more importantly orchestrate the power play. LeTang has great offensive ability yet is so fast he was able to get back to break up plays going the other way if needed. Lately however, they have been doing this 5 forwards on the power play and it has looked like sh_t. Not only have they been giving up a BUNCH of short handed odd-man rush situations, but they have been much less coordinated offensively while on the pp.

Third thing. I know LeTang played today and they lost, but there has been a huge correlation between LeTang playing and how the team performs...more so (IMHO) than Crosby or Malkin. Today was his (LeTang) first day back, but he didn't look like his normal self. I'm not sure what the situation was/is, since it was an undisclosed "lower body" injury.

See, I managed to almost do this whole post without calling anyone on the Philadelphia team a b*tch. (Well, except for the first sentence.)

Really? From behind the refs? Wait until Simmonds isn't swollen from scoring with his face on Sunday, Hartnell is out there, Shelley dresses, and Rinaldo knows there's actually a point to scrapping with someone like Asham. Asham was real tough going after Schenn.

Crosby has been making blind passes in front of his own net on several occasions and they're lucky it hasn't hurt them. I get every Pens game and try to watch them because they're skilled, fast and entertaining to watch, but they do have a crybaby attitude when addressing the officials and it's evident in how the broadcasters call the game and cry the same sob story every night.

Every team is going to go through spells. The Flyers seemed to be getting really primed for a playoff romp with how Bryz was finally starting to play, but then the bone chip/fracture. Who knows what's going to happen there. I'm concerned about sending Bob out every night for the playoffs if Bryz isn't healed up, especially against the Pens. As much as both sides like to **** talk these games, realistic fans who actually know the game know that nothing is finished with these two teams until it's a 3 goal lead with less than 2 minutes to go and even then, you're still a bit nervous about how crazy things go with this rivalry, although at that point, you're ready to see a brawl.

Agreed...saw it today with several opportunities where Fleury made saves. I think it's Crosby thinking he can make some ridiculous passes that aren't quite there yet, maybe it's chemistry, who knows.

I have Neal on my fantasy roster and he's been sick for the Pens. Scored today.

Third thing. I know LeTang played today and they lost, but there has been a huge correlation between LeTang playing and how the team performs...more so (IMHO) than Crosby or Malkin. He's a solid player and would love to have him on this side of the state for the right price (maybe, considering his proneness for injuries).

See, I managed to almost do this whole post without calling anyone on the Philadelphia team a b*tch. (Well, except for the first sentence.)

This is what's great about these teams playing each other...no matter what the lead or who jumps out early, it's never over until the clock has expired. I never turned the game off or away for a minute, even at 5-2, because I know how fast the Pens can put pucks in the net, especially with the power play.

I thought the Flyers had a good power play today with some nice tick tack toe passing/goals. Both teams are a blast to watch. I just wish some of the obvious stuff players like Crosby get away with didn't happen. It would be so much more enjoyable...I'm not saying the Flyers don't get away with things from time to time, but twice during the game, an argument could be made that the "C" on his sweater means "Can slash anyone with reckless abandon without penalty." He broke his own stick slashing a Flyer going through the neutral zone and then took two whacks at Giroux off a faceoff, knocking Giroux's stick out of his hands right in front of the official dropping the puck. Neither were called and both are the classic automatic calls. I also don't care for how he throws the body around, sometimes away from the play, and then looks at the ref with alligator tears after Schenn hits him after the whistle, which Crosby exaggerated into a Superman dive, another complaint people have.

If Crosby played the game the way Giroux does, I'd love him no matter what team he played for, in fact, even if he played more like Malkin and did less whining, he'd be fine.

I'm assuming you all who like the Pens absolutely hate Simmonds, almost as much as you hate Hartnell, like you hated Asham last year?

Also, what do you think of the leg on leg hit Vitale put on Grossmann?

How did you like Hartnell's impression of The Rock?

I can't wait for this Flyers Pens series! Anytime these two teams play it is such a fun time! I'm actually hoping the Pens get home ice... Flyers have SUCKED at home, and they haven't EVER lost in the Pens new arena...

Jt.. I agree with you... Simmonds is a total bad @$$! I haven't seen him lose a fight yet, and the ones he has been in, have been total domination. Love that guy....

Can't wait for the playoffs to start!

In case you missed it, here's someone's screen shot:

I can smell it. Penguins fans, can you smelelleleleleleell what Scottie's cooking?

Really? From behind the refs? Wait until Simmonds isn't swollen from scoring with his face on Sunday, Hartnell is out there, Shelley dresses, and Rinaldo knows there's actually a point to scrapping with someone like Asham. Asham was real tough going after Schenn.

I went back and reviewed (I have it DVR'd in HD). Vitale does a clean but hard hit, and all 5 flyers on the ice go after him, including Schenn. Mr. cross-check Crosby from behind avoids Asham, and trys to double up on Craig Adams (that's real courageous). Asham turns around and pulls Schenn off of Adams, then Schenn tries to throw a punch after which Asham just pummels him. In the meantime your baby coach throws a temper tantrum, grabs Talbots stick and breaks it with a piece of the stick flying into the Penguins bench. THAT is why Granato got up (Mr baby coach was already having his tantrum standing on the edge of the bench when Granato got up to answer him). Things progress nicely after that with Engellend teaching Simmunds a lesson.

Go back and look at the video, nice and slow instead of listening to idiot "Doc". All those clowns kept talking about was Crosby being upset about the hit....in the meantime Crosby wasn't saying squat to anyone.

You'll also notice that the Flyers ended up with the extra penalty, but I guess you just ignore that, eh?

Here's the penalties called as a result of the incident:
18:57 PHI Brayden Schenn served by Jaromir Jagr : Unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min
18:57 PHI Wayne Simmonds : Fighting (maj) - 5 min
18:57 PIT Deryk Engelland : Fighting (maj) - 5 min
18:57 PHI Pavel Kubina : Unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min
18:57 PIT Arron Asham : Unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min
18:57 PHI Marc-Andre Bourdon : Unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min
18:57 PIT Craig Adams : Unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min
18:57 PHI Danny Briere : Unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min
18:57 PIT Joe Vitale : Unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min
18:57 PHI Brayden Schenn : Roughing - 2 min
18:57 PHI Zac Rinaldo : Misconduct (10 min) - 0 min
18:57 PIT Arron Asham : Misconduct (10 min) - 0 min
18:57 PHI Jakub Voracek : Delay of game - bench - 2 min
18:57 PIT Paul Martin : Delay of game - bench - 2 min
18:57 PIT Matt Niskanen : Unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min

And when the game is out of reach at 6-3 and the Pens send out their 4th line and tough guys, there's a reason the instigator rule in the last 5 minutes was put in place.

After all that initial cat fighting was over, Asham tried to go after Rinaldo again stirring things up again.

Taught Simmonds a lesson? What were you watching? Remember the dude scored a goal off the bridge of his nose and had stitches in his face from it on Saturday and wasn't wearing a shield.

Go back and watch where Crosby hit Schenn earlier in the shift...

Go back and watch the play where Geno cross checks (can't remember if it was Giroux or Hartnell, I'm thinking Giroux) in the back and then punches him in the back of the head when Giroux's on the ice...and no call on that play either. It was during a Penguins' power play and Giroux was skating the puck back into his own zone, holding onto the puck to kill time.

I stand by Mike Milburry (this one and only time, I promise) about Granato doing the talking is like having your wife do the talking for you in a scrap at a bar.

The hit on Briere was clean and an open ice hit. No problems there other than the game is already over and the clock just needs to run out. The Pens were pissy because they keep losing, and losing after having leads, and losing to the Flyers who keeping coming from behind, and losing at home to the Flyers, and not catching the Rangers, and losing to non-playoff participants like the Islanders, etc.

The Flyers always get the extra penalty against the Penguins. It's probably why Simmonds didn't go ballistic. It's why Hartnell didn't do much of anything in the last game when Kunitz lost his mind and acted like a ******* with two officials trying to pull him off/separate him from Hartnell. It's why Rinaldo got a 10 minute misconduct for basically staying on his side of the ice and doing nothing when Asham went ape **** and tried to stir things up with the entire bench. It's the way it is for the Flyers and their fans. Pittsburgh will always get the benefit of the doubt so long as Golden Boy C on my sweater stands for Concussion prone and Can slash anyone without penalty Crosby plays for them. It's been that way since he was drafted and entered the league.

Like I said earlier, there were things that went uncalled against the Flyers I was surprised about, but the blatant, obvious, have been automatic calls like cross checking in the back and punching someone in the back of the head, breaking your stick or your opponent's stick when slashing them, and two back-to-back slashes off a faceoff where you knock your oppoenent's stick out of his hands...all obvious, all typically automatic penalties, unless you're a Penguin and you do it to a Flyer.

Notice on the penalties that Schenn did nothing more than anyone else in that scrap, but got the additional two minutes. If you add up all the PIMs in the recap, the Flyers were awarded 35/68 penalty minutes.

Everything about these games is always viewed with tinted glasses that favor the Pens. Look at the recap and how it says this:
Giroux gave Philadelphia life late in the first when his shot from the point squirted between Fleury's pads. Hartnell didn't receive an assist on the play, but he barreled into Fleury, obstructing the goaltender's view.

The puck was already through Fleury before Hartnell even touched him and he was pushed/knocked down and barely into Fleury by Michalek. He didn't do anything close to something that could be mistaken for barreling into Fleury.

Take the homer hat off for a minute and watch those plays over on your DVR.

Agreed, from what I saw they didn't treat Columbus as a threat and it bit them hard.

I have faith though, we clinched the division and to be honest, kinda glad they're not first overall, that Presidents Cup has some bad ju-ju around it.

That game was miserable. If we play like that in the playoffs, we're done. God I hope they can pull it together next week. It would be a shame to waste this season in the last few weeks.

They better pull it together. Detroit, Phoenix, and Dallas for the last three games. Phoenix and Dallas are still fighting for a spot so they're going to be hungry, Detroit's been playing tough all year.

Yes, the game was out of reach. Why wouldn't they play their 4th line? As you said, the game was out of reach, so why risk their star players for injury. By the way, Engelland isn't a no-skill tough guy, and neither is Asham.

You sound like my brother, except that he is always saying the refs have it in for the Penguins. I should introduce you. Then, you two can go on and on about things being slanted against you penalty wise (just don't mention the team).

Take the homer hat off for a minute and watch those plays over on your DVR.
Your the homer. "The refs are against us. The refs let Pittsburgh and Crosby get away with everything! Wha Wha Wha."

Sounds like you and I would have a great time drinking beers and watching this playoff series together, just with a set of plexiglass separating us like Laviolette and Granato.

Your brother gets it from the ******* that broadcast the game. I get it from watching the game as objectively as I can and calling it like it is. I said there was stuff I was surprised wasn't called on the Flyers, and officials make mistakes, but let's be honest and realistic. If that trash went other way, you'd be b*tching.

And you're kidding yourself about Asham. He has decent hands for the job he does, but that's a perk. The primary job he plays is a physical grinder that will throw punches and body weight. He's no Scott Hartnell, that's for sure. His 14 points and 76 PIMs doesn't even compete with Wayne Simmonds 48 points and 110 PIMs. Even Talbot has 33 and 57. Briere has almost as many PIMs as Asham. I was bummed to see him go two years ago, but with his production (lack of) and not being a physical force, I'm not complaining based on how other guys in Philly have filled that job.

So what is Asham's job then? 14 points, not a fighter? You're telling me he's not a no-skill tough guy...what is he then? He's not lighting it up on the score sheet and he's not really an intimidating factor on the ice...He's had 8 fights all year and nearly 16% of his PIMs were yesterday in a 2 and 10. He used to be good for 20-25 points, but only 11 last year, 14 this year...not really doing all that much for you.

You East coast creeps need to shut yer traps, nobody cares about the Flyers or Pens.

More importantly, Who is more inconsistent between Detroit, Nashville, and Chicago right now? Win, lose, win, lose, I have no idea who the 5-6 seed is going to be.

Both of these had me spitting out my drink (not beer unfortunately). LOL.

Penguins, Flyers, Rangers....all are better than anything in your conference. The only question is whether they obliterate each other enough to allow one of the Western conference teams to win.

You'll be eating crow when St. Louis kicks your ass!

Hey.. wait a minute...

Google is your friend. Or Yahoo! (only if you're feeling frisky).

What does that have to do with the conversation other than demonstrate you can't talk about the current season and are living in the past?

The last time the Flyers held the Cup is about as relevant as all the stats you've been throwing around come next week.

A discussion of the Flyers or Pens season doesn't really interest me at all. Or the back and forth about who's the bigger homer. I'm more interested in whether or not the Wings will pull their heads out of their asses before the games really count.

Hey.. wait a minute...

I love how the Blues have one decent year in the last decade and they're now the talk of the town, at least in St Louis. Haven't made it out of the second round since 2000-2001. Win a playoff series or two and then we'll talk. At least your ticket to the post season is punched. We'll see if your team does anything this time around.

And if they don't, they'll be just as irrelevant as they are right now, just irrelevant AND on vacation.

Wish I could argue with that but they have been pathetic for quite some time now. Still only 2 points behind your unbelievably talented and unbeatable flyers squad in points this season. Not terrible for a pathetic excuse for a hockey club I guess.:p

I'm not a fan of either team, but I can tell you that if Crosby wants to dish it out, he better learn how to take it. If you want to play a certain way in the NHL, you will be held accountable for your actions, whether you are a 4th line plugger or a superstar.

I never said the Flyers were water walkers...just that they're not the sh*t bags Pens fans try to make them out to be.

Touche.

Verified, but he'll continue to throw tantrums. I wish Hatcher was here to knock his teeth out, again.

inb4 Crosby re-concusses himself

Funny that you worded that he's going to cause it himself.

Wow I'm late to this one. A few things:

Anyone who doesn't think the Pens, Crosby and Malkin especially, don't get away with murder is blind. You can be a homer and be biased for your team, but if you don't see the refs biting down on their whistles and not calling things, you're not watching the game.

Vitale's hit on Briere was a legal and clean hit, but it was still a bull**** hit at that point in the game. Lavi shouldn't have put the Briere/Schenn/Simmer line out there at that point, but the hit was still ****.

Asham is a real *********. The Pens got Asham, the Flyers got Talbot and Jagr this offseason...I'll take that trade off.

Malkin punching Giroux in the back of the head multiple times while he was down on the ice and not getting called for it was ridiculous, but pretty par for the course.

Pens fans crying about Crosby getting cross checked are ridiculous. Rewind to a minute before that and watch him.

I now really like Mike Milbury:

http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/20...y-and-coach-blysma-should-take-off-his-skirt/

"And I thought Dan Bylsma should have taken off his skirt and gone over there."

and

“Little goody two shoes [Crosby] goes into the corner and gives a shot to Schenn. Schenn was late to the party, he should have turned around and drilled him right away, but I guess better late than never,” Milbury said. “So you know, Crosby gets cross-checked, big whoop. He said after he came back from his 35th concussion, ‘I’m not going to do this anymore, I’m not going to get into this scrums, I’m going to stay away from that stuff.’ He couldn’t help himself because there’s a little punk in Crosby. He’s not the perfect gentleman. He’s not the sweet kid you see in interviews with his hat pulled down over his eyes. I’d say screw him, hit him.”

Also, please sign the deed for the Consol Energy Center over to Mr. Sergei Bobrovsky. He owns it.

Another example of how Philly always gets the extra and the Pens never get equal treatment compare to the rest of the league:

$10,000 fine for Laviolette, $2,500 for Granato. Just like when Staal boarded Coburn, only a $2,500 fine and no suspension.

It's the way it is for the Flyers.

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/7...ttsburgh-penguins-assistant-fined-roles-brawl

You really do have a persecution complex.

Here's the facts:
1. Laviolette gets pissed, throws a tantrum including taking Talbot's stick, whacking it with the result pieces of the stick fly all over the place.
2. Laviolette (the COACH, who is supposed to show his team RESTRAINT), gets up and stands on the end of the bench and starts yelling and reaching toward the Penguins bench.
3. Granato responds and tells Laviolette (Mr tantrum) to settle down and the two get in a verbal argument.
4. After the game, Laviolette continues his tantrum in the News Conference,
“Those guys hadn’t played in 12 minutes; it was a gutless move by their coach [Dan Bylsma],” Laviolette said. “It’s just gutless.”

And your surprised that Laviolette got a bigger fine?

All in all, I think puck-daddy sized it up just about right: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/flyers-coach-laviolette-fined-10-000-tantrum-versus-214842940.html.

By the way, Hartnell (who isn't exactly my favorite), summed it up pretty well:
“They made a clean hit on Danny,” Scott Hartnell said. “They were trying to send a message. We’re up a few goals. Obviously, they had their meat out there. A few fights squared away.
