First, the Rangers are only 1 point ahead of Pittsburgh (and only 5 ahead of Philadelphia for that matter). More importantly, the playoffs are what matters, not who wins one of the six divisions. The bigger issue for Pittsburgh and Philadelphia isn't that they wouldn't beat the Rangers in the playoffs (either one should), it's that they are likely to face each other in round 1.

p.s. I think the Capitals would take the Rangers in round 1 (if the standings stay where they are).

It is a fairly good measuring stick. I definitely wouldn't be interested in playing the Rangers.

The year the Flyers backed into the playoffs and made their attempt at the cup. They faced the devils who were a #2 seed in the first round. Flyers took the whole season series and the playoff series in i think it was 5 games.

I wouldn't mind if the Flyers 'fall' to 6 and played the cats or caps. Better first round matchup than playing the pens in the first round.

Let's Westernize the concept...

You could look at the record of teams who got to play St. Louis more before Hitchcock was hired and assume they will own the Blues in the playoffs.

But as we all know, the playoffs are a completely different situation, and the Blues have been playing unbelievably better since they got a new coach.

Likewise, in the West, the number of teams moving up and down the ranking has been incredible this season. Looks like a lot of things have settled down lately, but for a while 6 or more teams were in the hunt for best record.

Teams get hurt, teams are overwhelmed by the playoffs, teams get on a hot streak...

Oh wait, it sounds like I'm agreeing with you on this.
