This is probably stupid but I haven't read or seen anything about it on any of the electric build threads so figured I would just ask. I have been brewing off and on for about 25 years now, always used a propane burner. So now I am considering buying the still as yet unreleased Blichmann Boil Coil for my 20-gal boilermaker. Does the outside of the pot/kettle get as hot as the liquid inside the pot? I'm asking because will also need to buy a SS table or something along those lines to set the pot on when heating it now that I won't have the propane burner to set the pot on?????

212° isn't that hot for even wooden tables. Use cork or some other insulation if you are worried about it or can't get a SS table.

I put my kettle on some silicone potholder/trivet things.
No marks or evidence of excessive heat on the formica countertop.

I dealt more damage to my wood table from tipping my pot and scratching than I did from the heat. IKEA sells cork mats pretty cheap.

Yes, but as other have said it's not really an issue.

In my original brewery I used a wood table that was stained and if I didn't use cork matts then the boil kettle would stick slightly to the table.

In my new brewery I went with a stainless table mostly for looks and cleanliness and while it gets hot immediately underneath the boil kettle, a few inches away the table is only warm.

plain wood floor underlayment is what I used.... after I paint it to seal it I plan on picking up a few 16x16 ceramic or stone floor tiles from mr seconds to use everywhere but under my hlt...I need to get creative there and leave the middle open because of my stir plate I made to recirculate the water during herms use..
the pots have not effected the wood at all as others have stated. I too was asking myself the same question though before my first test run.

My electric brew kettle was slightly melting the cork pads I had it sitting on (they'd stick to the kettle and make a mess when trying to separate them), so I went to the local junk yard and picked up a large ceramic tile, which now sits between my kettle and wooden brewstand.

So it's obvious you're a person that likes to throw money away...that or you are a Blichmann rep. In any case, why not just pick up a Camco Ultra Low Density Water Heater 5500W and you're good to go? Those Blichmann coils are going to cost you almost two bills. That Camco heater is $20 on Amazon...do the math!

Or he just might not realize the blichmann wont do anything special to improve his experience.... It could also be that his setup is as much about looks as function...Some people are particular. In either case your comment is pretty opinionated... its like telling someone there stupid for buying a corvette they can easily afford when they can just buy a cobalt for less...For one thing the $20 element can rust...

Wow - I just read lafolielapper's post, not sure how I missed it and I know it has been over 3 years since he posted but I really have to say that is one dopey and arrogant reply. Although you are obviously quite good at math, your social skills are lacking. To set the record straight, no, I'm not a blichmann rep.. I just like to consider all my options and ask questions... Thanks for the sage advice.
