Just ordered a Dundalk Irish heavy kit. Anyone else get one of these or have any experience with this? Im really looking forward to brewing this as it will be my first 5 gallon batch.

No, but it's all I can think about after getting the email from norther brewer.

Yea I saw the email and read up on it and figured that it would make an excellent first 5 gallon for me so I ordered before they're gone.

I thought about ordering the Dundalk, then I started looking at the ingredients list, it doesnt have much to it for 42 bucks, I went and added everything up separately, came out to be 33 bucks, so I just saved recipe and might go back and buy everything later. Really annoying how NB puts a kit together of stuff they already have in stock, then ups the price. It should go down or stay the same.

As for the Bourbon Barrel Porter, yes a friend of mine brewed it was delicious paired with a box of Coconut Caramel Girl scout cookies :p

Dang! I wish I would have noticed this before I had my SWMBO order it for me! $33.03 for the ingredients (with leftover hops and grain) vs. $42.45 for the kit. I have compared ingredients to kits on NB before and they have always ended up slightly cheaper as a kit. I guess they marked it up because its a "special edition?" I sent them a message asking about the price difference. I'll let you all know when/if I get a response.

Yea that is definitely a good thing to know for future use.

I downloaded the instructions/ingredients pdf from NB's website. Went to my local brew store and bought everything for $27 and some change... bonus is no shipping fees.

Lol!!!

And their response:

Justin,
What our customers pay for with our kits (beyond the ingredients, the muslin bag, instructions, Beer Style Card in the LE kits, box and presentation) is our kit guarantee. While we encourage brewers of all different calibers to buy separate ingredients and create their own beers or clones of our beers, we would be unable replace all the individual parts if something were to go wrong with the beer. However, if one of our kits fails to produce the experience that expectation demands from our hand crafted kits, we will gladly replace the kit with few questions asked. It's with this confidence in hand that brewers of every experience level can brew our kits, not worry, and enjoy a homebrew. Beyond that, we hope the extensive recipe formulation, the great customer service, and the labor of putting together our hand crafted kits would be wrapped up in the pricing as well. Granted, we do post our recipes for free for our customers and non-customers alike, but we do so out of good will to all brewers. Hopefully you will find the answers here acceptable. If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Cheers!

Mine is due Monday and can't decide if I want to brew the White House Honey Ale on Sunday or wait for this to come in and brew it next weekend...

Mine came today and I have a 1 gallon kit of White House Honey Ale coming Monday. It will be a while before I brew either. Gotta free up some bottles first.

I brewed this kit last year. The taste was pretty good, maybe a little more caramel than a normal red. Not much for bitter, but it was there, nice balance. Mine took quite a while to carb up, but it was my first batch, so it was probably something I messed up.

Ordered it as well. It will be my first 5gal and my second home brew. My first (Irish red ale) will be ready on St Paddy's day. The box my bottles sit in are mocking me ever day. Tasted it right after bottling from the primary. Not bad. I imagine it can only get better.

I just got done brewing mine. I couldn't wait. I guess now I have an excuse to empty more bottles and/or give it more time in primary

I have my kit at home but am trying to plan out my night accordingly. Is this kit a full boil or just 2.5 gallons? I don't have the equipment at my house for a full 5 gallon boil and don't really feel like driving to get it (about 20 miles each way). Any help would be appreciated.

2.5 by the instructions. I did a full boil but I kind of wish I hadn't. It was my first time brewing on a propane burner instead of My electric stove and I had a lot of boilover

I recieved mine this week as well (#432 out of 1,000) and just pulled the yeast out to get a starter going. I'll brew it up Saturday as a full-boil. Glad to know I can put this kit together myself next time!

Anyone have any tips on the ferm temps? The range looked pretty wide...

Also, has anyone worked with Marris Otter extract before? Better to space out the extract over the length of the boil or all at once?

I brewed mine on the 11th. It's fermenting at 66 degrees. Figured right in the middle is best that way if there is any change plus or minus it would still be in the range. As far as the Marris otter I added it in one shot per the instructions. Then took a measuring cup and poured about 2 cups of boiling wort in the container and shook it around to get most of it out. Make sure you have a big enough pot. Once you add the DME and syrup it brings it up quite a bit.

Be sure to have a pot big enough. This happened to me after my first hop addition. What you don't see is the half gallon of wort that I had already removed prior to anything else going in knowing I wasn't going to have enough room.

If you'll dip some hot wort out of the main pot into a bowl or measuring cup on top of the hops to temper them, then add it back into to main pot, it will be less likely to boil over.

Of course a bigger pot works too.

Anyone finished yet? Mine has been in primary for about 4 weeks now and I plan to bottle tomorrow. My OG was lower than target, coming in at 1.052. SG today was 1.008. I'm sure it will be the same tomorrow so I can bottle. The sample tasted great. Can't wait until it's done!

I'm gonna keg mine sometime this week. Brewed on the 11th so I'm almost at 4 weeks in primary. Haven't even checked on it besides watching ferm temps. Has been a steady 70-72 degrees. My OG was spot on at 1.062

Mine is done and is now gone! It was my best brew yet. Very complex yet easy to drink. You can taste a coffee undertone. I am going to make this again very soon. I used that Williams warn machine, it was ready in 1 week.
