Now here's the dumb question, I'm boiling and topping off to 5g with this right? so it's taking into account top off in the Og and FG right?

I'm brewing this on sunday.

Thanks

Gerald

It looks like that. What does it say on the brewsheet? When you click on "preview brewsheet"? You have the boil volume correct, but I can't really "see" the directions here.

Another point- Beersmith doesn't really give you a projected FG. It doesn't take temperature/ingredients/yeast strain etc into account. It's just a "standard" FG number that is really pretty meaningless, 25% of the OG.

You have to guestimate the FG yourself.

I would just use my hydrometer but I'm an idiot with it, I always get 1.000 for my readings. Dunno why.

+1 to what yoop said,

2 things tho. its not a SMASH with 2 grains and cant be a belgian dubbel with no belgian yeast

I was just trying to fit it into a category in beersmith. I'm not too worried about styles as long as it tastes good. I didn't think oats were considered a grain.

It doesn't take temperature/ingredients/yeast strain etc into account.
In my experiences switching a recipe from WLP 001 to US-05 the FG numbers most certainly did slightly change. I switched back and forth a couple time to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. I think you may be mistaken in your assertion.

I'm using version 1.40 build 038.

The yeast input tables include attenuation factors. My guess is, Yooper has 75% plugged into all the yeasts she is using in Beersmith. I had to manually input US-05 and I input whatever factor was provided on the Safale datasheet. This should explain why changing yeasts changes the FG calculation which apparently is factoring in the attenuation variable.

I'm using S04 because that 's what my lhbs told me it was, he has it in bulk not packets so I hope that's what it is. He only carries the one yeast. I'd like to try a few different yeasts. I've washed some from other beers but don't really know what yeasts they'd be.

Beersmith calculates OG based on batch size so if you top up to 5 gal your OG should be correct.

Seriously? Your LHBS only carries one yeast? If he's like that, I'd be worried about what he tells you the grains are. He probably only has a couple of grains too! You need a new LHBS.
