I 've had my first AG IPA in primary for 10 days. I used Ed Worts stone IPA clone.

Reading this forum, I plan to put my 1 oz. of pellet hops in a paint strainer, tie it up with fishing line (after sanitized) and dangle in the secondary carboy.

Do I need to weight it down, or don't bother?

How long for secondary?

Do I leave the hops in up to the time of bottling?

Why not just drop the pellets straight in (w/o stainer)?
Then use the strainer over your siphon when racking. That way the hops will sink on their own.

If you are going for a 2 week secondary then leave them in the whole time. Some people report grassy off flavors from >2week dry hop. I can not say that I have seen this.

I used to use a hop bag with marbles, but what a PITA to get them out of the carboy. I say just drop them in or pick up one of these:

Works great.

Hello all Im looking for Hop seeds to start to grow my own Hops? if anyone can help?

It's not quite the time of year for hop growing, but here is a place that will provide you quite an bit of info on the whens and hows.

Freshops

The hop pellets will expand. If they are in a bag, the bag will expand with them and you'll be left with a swollen sack stuck in your carboy.

Nothing worse than a swollen sack...

I tried the marbles in a bag too...what a mess afterward. I personally would not just drop them in though because when they sink to the bottom you'll lose a good bit of your surface area contact between the hops and the wort. Also, you may want to consider two or three hop bags at one oz. each if you are looking for a hop aroma treat! I put the hops in a cheese cloth and give them a good dosing into the wort and let them sit on top (after a good fermentation period). There may be some who gasp at this but...I have been known to open the lid and dunk them at regular intervals. Be advised.. if you do this you risk wort contamination. I've never had a problem with it but I know others that have.

my best success at dry hopping has come when i put the hops in about 3-4 days before packaging. i just dump the whole quantity in w/o weighting them down, putting them in a bag, etc. i get fresh hop aroma in my beer that way.

I did this brew and I just used 1oz of whole leaf and dumped it right in. Then I put a strainer bag over my racking cane to keep from picking any up when racking.
This brew turned out GREAT even my buddy that hates IPA's like it. :rockin:

He hates IPAs'!?! Sounds like you need a new friend:tank:

Cheers
I don't have any money to buy new friends... :(

He hates bitter beers and he does not know or understand the difference of bitter and hoppy.

The three times I've dried hopped, I just used whole leaf hops. They sit on top of the wort so I don't know if I'm getting the hops full capability, but the beer sure ended up tasting damn good.

I used a strainer bag over my auto-siphon to keep out the sediment when racking to my bottling bucket and it worked great. Getting the hops out of the glass carboy wasn't that bad, just a couple rinses.

this is what i was planning on doing but my 2 questions are:
-will siphoning through a grain bag oxygenate beer?
-cleaning/sanitizing grain bag? figured starsan would weaken bag if soaked--also all that sanitizer in the bag when you go to rack???

I've never had my hops settle to the bottom, they usually just hang out near the top
