and feeling GREAT!

I never jumped aboard the "lost weight" thread, although I should've. But, I stepped on the scale 10 days ago and weight 230! I about **** myself. Decided time to lose some weight, and quick.

Cut off beer for 5 days. I've been eating a small bowl of high fiber cereal and skim milk + 1 apple for breakfast. Vegetables, lightly buttered for lunch and a small portion of meat. Then whatever the hell I want for dinner.... usually a steak and potatoes. I run 2 - 3 miles a day 5 days a week... not fast, but a good jog. Usually 10 minute miles.

The pounds started melting off, seriously averaging 1lb a day and I already look WAY trimmer.

I'm gonna keep it up for at least another month and then probably wind down a bit, but keep up a little exercise here and there. Easily the best diet ever, the main thing is keeping your mind on that tasty dinner and stopping yourself from snacking during the day. NO potatoe chips, no snickers, no regular sodas and lots of water(help you feel full).

Congrats man. I would have a tough time doing that in Germany. That is where I put my weight on in a few weeks and it takes months to get it off back here in the states. I'm back to beer on weekends only starting Tuesday, well maybe Wednesday. :D

It wasn't too bad Ed. I also knew that this Friday (2 days ago) I would be spending the day at a brauhaus getting gitty with some friends. I was there by lunchtime didn't leave til 7 and was drinking their hefe allll day. And, a couple of their schwarz ;)

Rewards are a VERY important part of a diet. I've learned that pretty quickly.

I need to do what you just did. I quick smoking recently, and gained about 11 lbs in 3-4 weeks(which is alot for me). But I just hurt my shoulder again, and im in a sling for a week. So as soon as my shoulder is better....will be waking up an hour earlier to go run and swim some laps.

Good job and thanks for the unseen words of encouragement

Man, thats pretty dang quick, make sure that you're still eating eough calories, usually when you lose 1lb/day, you're losing muscle mass as well as fat. Don't starve yourself, the body will consume your muscle first...

Good to go though man! Not trying to rain on your parade, just want you healty! good luck!

i gained 15 lbs in the last month...more than i've ever weighed. I think i'm going to have to cut back on the drinking a bit and start riding my bike to work every day. finally getting old enough for that stuff to matter...

I hear ya Rook, I thought about that. But, I've been been eating good.. plenty of calories, especially at dinner. I'm just not overeating and the running is DEFINITELY burning fat. I'm getting more toned, I can almost see a stomach muscle already. I'm sure it will slow down soon, but I was bloated, serious bloated from too many fats, carbs and slothlike behavior.

Also, the 2-3 miles has been hitting 3 miles the past 3 runs. It's getting easier and I'm getting in better shape.

A month ago SWMBO and I started a diet. Nothing fancy, just cutting back where ever possible. We also bought an elliptical machine with our unexpected tax return money. I am down 15 pounds. If I can loose (and keep off) 25 more pounds I will be happy. My family has a history of heart disease so I have to start thinking about this now (I am 23).

An elliptical is a great idea, if I had one in the house I would do 15 or 20 minutes whenever I was bored during the day.

Yeah it is great. I can't stand running and this I can don't have to worry about what time of day, temp. outside, etc. It is right by a TV but lately I have been using it while listing to Basic Brewing Radio podcasts.

I lost 10 lbs when I moved here, the twice a day dog walks involves some hill climbing. But, I've been stuck at 180lb since. Losing weight is tough at 55. I'm considering getting a treadmill & building it into my workstation. I tried it with a stationary bike, but it was too hard to type.

One thing I learned when I was working out all the time (which I need to get back to) is that your body works off of short-term supplies of energy for the first 20 minutes or so of the workout, after 20 minutes, then it turns to its fat stores for energy to burn. So everything after 20 minutes of cardio (jogging, elliptical, bicycle, etc) is the good stuff.

Hmm.. work out or drink beer... maybe it should be workout TO drink beer :D

My SWMBO has been dieting for the last 6 months or so. She lost about 27 #'s. I was not too worried about my own weight. I was a bit heavy for my height I guess last time I weighed myself (last winter some time). 185 @ 5'10"

I just on a whim meighed myself the other day. I was @ 164! Guess her diet worked vicariously through me. Alright, more beer! :mug:

Well, I have been walking more now that it is warm again too...

I'm in the middle of one too. Was over 240 and 5'11" now I about 210. I started riding a bicycle, at first I was lucky to do 5 miles I just hit 20 miles, trying to do it at least 5 days a week, getting ready to hit the weights again also. Now if I can just cut back on the beer.

Ditch them taters and stay away from starches/sugars and you suprize yourself on how much more you will drop. Stick with the veggies fruit and meat and you'll be golden

I do a fair bit of cycling (~100 mi/wk + racing) and I've found that the only thing that really matters for weight loss is calories in < calories out. It's not a problem with the cycling training schedule I have, but for most people excercise is more important. At least 30 min (60 is better) of good cardio 3-5 times a week will go a long way towards a healthy weight.

As for weight loss speed, generally you'll want to shoot for 1-2 pounds per week unless you have a very high body fat %. If your weight fluctuates more than about 1 lb per day chances are you're dehydrated (never a good thing). I'm 6' tall, and a year ago (prior to getting into cycling) I weighed in at 180, presently I'm hovering right on the 140 mark, ~5% BF and am quite skinny (I'm a climber at heart on the bike). I don't eat any less well than I did at my higher weight, but am much more active and have cut out snacking altogether. It's possible to drastically change your body, but it does take some work.

I hear ya Pumbaa, but I can't do it. I love the starches too much.... so rewarding myself with them at dinner time is a big plus in the diet. I used to eat them all day AND drink beer.

No chance of dehydration, I drink TONS of water. Helps me feel full and skip out on the snacking.

Well, since this has now become my diet blog of sorts I'll go ahead and post my latest achievement:

Today, I ran 4 miles in 41.5 minutes..... I've never run 4 miles before. I'm telling ya'll, I'm gonna be in better shape than when I was 16. Haven't lost any poundage since yesterday, but feeling really good.
