Hello all,

Just joined homebrewtalk today!
I've made a total of 4 home-brew batches with a 5 gal. setup and just recently purchased a 10 gal. pot. I'm still using extract brewing and using prepackaged kits. I am curious if I can just buy two kits and brew both at the same time (double ingredients/quantities in their respective steps) and come out with a quality product (x2).

Are there any precautions or altered steps than making a single 5 gallon batch?

All help and tips are greatly appreciated,
Thank you!

A 10 gallon pot isn't going to be enough for a 10 gallon batch unless you're diluting the wort a lot at the end, in which case you're inheriting all the problems (hop utilization, extract scorching, ... ) that come with that.

However a 10 gallon pot is ideal for 5 gallon BIAB batches, which - assuming your heat source can boil 7-8 gallons - makes the step-up from extract pretty painless and the improvement in your beer remarkable.

Thank you for the quick responses!

Yes, I also picked up a propane burner and a copper wort chiller.

The BIAB I have used all recommend steeping with 2-3 gallons and adding the remainder to the fermenter when chilled. A double batch would require 4-6 gallons in the pot and then topping off the fermenter(s). However, I'm assuming this may be an issue when I go all-grain and want to do larger batches.

The 10 gal. is a top hat, more vertical than it is wide and the wort chiller was custom made to fit all the way at the bottom of the pot.

I will need to read up on hop utilization, extract scorching and anything else that may be an issue.
