So I am in the middle of a BIAB cream ale and I accidentally added the corn sugar that was supposed to go in during the boil to the mash. Will this mess me up bad? I'm assuming it'll throw my starting gravity reading at the least.

It will lower your OG because some of the corn sugar will be lost due to the wort absorbed by the grain bed. The effect could be calculated if you have detailed info on the recipe, amount of water used, grain absorption rate, and whether you sparge or not.

Brew on :mug:

I actually only added half recipe calls for 8 oz during boil I added 4. I also have an extra bag, think it would be a good idea to add 6 ounces to the boil when I start that? Using 10lb of grain with 7.5 gallons of water no sparge.

Home brewing often takes the form of "remedial brewing"..... Just continue as planned and correct the OG later by adding sugar in the fermenter. You probably won't lose enough to be a big difference anyway. Use your brewing software, and adjust your corn sugar to hit the actual OG. The difference is how much you would need to add to the fermenter. You can use Brewer's Friend at no cost. Plug the recipe you were using into BF, and adjust the efficiency to hit your target OG, then subtract sugar until you hit actual OG. If you have a difference of 3 ounces, take some wort out of the fermenter and boil 3 ounces of corn sugar in it, and pour it into the fermenter.......... Does that make sense?
Get used to making mistakes.......... and figuring how to remedy them. This may be the first, but it won't be the last.

H.W.

.......... PS. You can add sugar at any point of the fermentation (primary).

A quick calculation says 1/4 lb of corn sugar added to the mash will up your pre-boil gravity by about 0.001 SG. 1/2 lb of corn sugar in the BK should up your pre-boil gravity by about:
0.5 * 0.046 * 0.9 / 6.7 = 0.003 SG
So since you will have an extra 0.001 before adding more sugar, you only need to add enough sugar to up the pre-boil SG by 0.002, or 2/3 of 8 oz = 5.33 oz. Your guess of 6 oz would be ok as well.

+1^^^ What he said. Whether you use 42 or 46 ppg, the overall impact is minimal. If you don't want to get into your other bag and just finish using the 4 oz you originally intended, you'll only be off 1 or 2 SG points. You can chalk this up to a learning experience...and you'll still have beer. BTW, RDWHAHB! Ed

I'll add it I actually have like 4 extra bags from when I use to do extract brewing because I never bottled. Sounds good though thanks!
