I was planning to brew a kolsch this weekend, but my LHBS had no fresh wyeast 2565, althought they had a pouch in the 1/2 off yeast I usually stay away from, which i got since it was my only option.

This 2565 was made in early June. The package expanded a little bit after a few hours at RT after smacking it. When I went to pour it into a starter it smelled kind-of-funky is the best to way to describe it, a bit sulfury.

I pitched it into a small starter to see how it does and it looks like there is activity already (2 hours later), but the smell made me wonder if the yeast can really 'go bad' I have only used this once before so I don't remember if it normally smells weird.

I have a fresh cake of great german lager yeast which will be ready this weekend, so I can just make a pils with that if you think its best to stay away from this old, smelly kolsch yeast 2565. I appreciate any input from those who have used this strain a lot.

Yes, I have used that yeast and thought the same thing even after fermentation, but the beer turned out to be fantastic even reused it in an IPA also very good.
