I just watched a DVR'd episode and they were brewing 22 gallons of brown ale.

I thought that it was very cool. Also noticed that there was a corny keg hooked up and they were having a party.

I saw that as well. I thought it was pretty cool, but curious where they bought supplies. The long arm of making ones own booze is far outstretched. :rockin:

Saw it as well and certainly enjoyed it. Of course I'm sitting there wondering about the grain bill and hop schedule, lol. I am a fan of brown ales so that didn't hurt. They covered the basics - barley, water, hops, yeast. He was using mason jars for the hops and yeast. Yeast looked like slurry from a previous batch. I'd love to have access to that water...it was just pouring out of the side of the mountain :)

Yep I wonder the grain bill as well.

I'm guessing that they buy the grain from somewhere. The hops are probably home grown based on what they look like.

The yeast did look like slurry from a previous batch.

I think it would cool to hang out and drink with those guys. I'd be interested in fishing with them also.

I saw that last night. I almost caught the name of the fermentation vessel he was using but it was cut off as soon as I could almost see it. He definitely grew his own hops... Back a few years ago he started growing hops for it. Not sure what his recipe was, but it was a brown ale and people didnt look like they were forcing it down. So I'd have a beer with those guys for sure!

He also stated he was going to put it by the fireplace to keep it warm and happy... I have no clue how hot it gets in their cabin, but hopfully he just means that he is putting it in the same room as the fireplace... Otherwise, it probably ferments a bit hot...

My guess is that he gets his grains from the Brew Shop in Homer. Otherwise he could order bulk and/or get grain from one of the breweries in town. The homestead is not that far from Homer. I was up there two months ago on my honeymoon and drove right past the road to the homestead when we were out sightseeing.

Very cool!

I saw that and it was nice to see these resourceful people making their own beer.

But off topic I have seen them snagging salmon many times on the TV and also have watch on Alaska State Troopers the cops giving tickets to "snaggers". Those homesteaders are not native Alaskans so how do they get away w/that???

I thought that was cool as well! I bet we could ask them on facebook about the recipe. Im curious when Atz Lee has his bad fall? They previewed the snot out of it and Jane had a bunch of Facebook statements/press releases, but then no mention. They literally live only like 10 minutes from Homer. It makes it seem they are so far away.

Reading this thread has ruined my perception of this show..... :(

Still, cool that he brews, I know that one guy on Life Below Zero did as well, there was just a brief mention of it.

How would it change your perception? Out of all the reality shows, I would have to say it's pretty spot on. The cast members have said that there are some things that the cameras miss and they are asked to recreate but those are few and it's still stuff they do. Not fake. Now if you were into the Bush People haha. As to snagging, yeah. I saw that episode in particular where they literally were and discussed it! At least they weren't hiding it. But that's how it is up there.

I looked at a map and saw where they live. Then saw where they drive the cattle to the head of the bay, they take them through a damn town just about! I imagined they were much more remote, not just off of the main road...

I still love the show and agree it is minimally scripted, or they're better at hiding it, I think they are just genuinely interesting people to watch. A small part of me died inside though, like when i found out Santa wasn't real last year...

I realized something was up when eiven and eve went to the hunters cabin last season and there was a shot of them in front of the cabin and you could see cars driving in the distance. Lol still a 600 acre homestead in Alaska.

Oh wow, I never saw that haha. I'll have to look for it.

Kinda like this....

That's freakin hilarious!! Yeah I'd take Alaska tlf over grylls any day. Heck even the bush people! And that's saying something!

That town is not much of a town, lol. They are close to civilization, but it is still pretty minimalistic. It would take a good couple hours to get to the next major town that resembles Homer. Even though the show gives a false perception, it is still a completely different way of life up there.

Oh I totally agree, I just had this idea that they were so isolated and a good day or so journey from civilization, didn't realize there was places nearby, other than the couple friends they include on the show.

There are certain streams and lakes where snagging is permitted. I've also seen them swinging streamers and casting streamers on streams where snagging wasn't permitted.

Alaska is a whole other ball of wax compared to most of the lower 48 as far as fishing regs go. They also change the regs frequently.

I'm not into snagging because I know the salmon bite and eat that are in rivers and streams. If they're that thick in a river where they can be snagged there surely has to be a biter on skein or crank.

Awe no... That bear grylls video just made me... well... I died a little inside there...

Someone should FB about the recipe though... I would try brewing it just for funzies.

I like the show but my wife keeps trying to tell me it's fake. Just let me enjoy it! I don't tell her how fake Real Housewives or the Biggest Loser is.
