damn i got an o-ring that's just not big enough...need to stretch it about 10mm....think if i hang it with some weight for a day or something it will get bigger? (and yes, this is a real problem i'm having, lol)

Actually, if you soak it in oil, it will swell. Maybe coconut oil.

lol, think a 280mmx8.7mm would swell to ~290mm? i got some veg oil....i got a 300mm o-ring that turned out to be too big....

Warming it up (soaking in hot water) may make it more pliable, easier to stretch, but I still don't think your going to get an extra 10mm out of it.

warming it up will be the next thing i try...i think if i can get it pliable enough, and get into the groove, it will stay....got it soaking in veg oil now, we'll see how it goes...

warming it with a hair dryer didn't work either....had it soaking in oil...back too my first thought...and if anyone doesn't think this is serious...here's a pic of the way it's going to hang over night...

(and y'all have fun!!)

i'm not good at math, but a 10mm increase from 280mm to 290, would only be 4%? and i'm hoping once it's stretched somehow it'll stay in the groove on the lid of my fermenter...i've already spent $14 on two o-rings, a whole new bucket only costs $20....so instead of trying to buy another 290mm, was hoping...MY o-ring doesn't get stretched...

and i like the boiling idea too! clean off the oil, and heat it up.....! :mug:

If you have two o rings you can cut both and ad a piece from one to make the other the correct length. Super glue them together.

No. Really it works. There are even make your o ring kits available.

i was thinking of shortening the 300mm...just wasn't sure if i'd be able to trust the bubbles then! lol

got some hefty min order quantities though...(i did find it funny the first thing i noticed, was the o-ring lube though...lol)

anyway i tried stretching my small oring, didn't work...so i took a pair of dyke's too the one that was slightly too big....gonna brew tomorrow again...i'll either post a topic about a stuck ferment not bubbling, or reply here with good results....

The trick to gluing an o-ring together is to be sure the ends are flat. Use a razor blade to cut with as the dyke's my cut uneven.
^This^ Cut the oring (with anything), overlap the ends together so you can cut through both with one press of the razor blade. That will get you both ends cut at complementary angles.

damn...i was even using dyke's...and didn't even thinking cutting on the bias....too late now, on to the silicon sealant...

Dykes squeeze too much before actually severing which deforms the cut. You really have to use a razor, Xacto, handy samurai sword, something like that.

handy advice, i'll get this o-ring problem figured out!
