I mean if your a homebrewer in the US, shouldn't you only brew with american malt, hops and yeast!

I personally do.....:mug:

I believe in supporting my LHBS to boost the local economy, and your standard base malt is usually not only from your country but from your local area as well. As for yeast, hops and specialty grains, I'm buying from all over. UK specialty malts in particular are often superior to domestic, in my opinion. I'm in Canada.

German beer? isn't that what rice is for! lol

I buy local but not always local “stuff”. Although I have been using some grains from CO lately.

If memory serves, OP brews Brut Farmhouse APA. Home-malted barley and house yeast repitched indefinitely.

lol, it's good to be remembered! But when i buy hops i do just buy american 2 year old back stock....being that i just need a preservative....

speaking of that, i just noticed that these nottingham packets say product of austria! what would be a comparable american yeast?

(i did post this in the right topic this time, right? lol) :mug:

I buy for my recipes. I recently got a bag of Copeland pilsner from a maltster literally 60 miles north of me, though I bought it through my LHBS. I buy Thomas Fawcett for my wee heavy, which comes all the way from the UK, as well as the hops, being East Kent Goldings. Also all bought through my LHBS.

I don't think there is dogmatically any reason to stick with US sourced ingredients. When it is possible, I stay hyperlocal, but being in the Pacific Northwest I have an edge on that. But if you are trying to imitate terrior from another region, what are your options?

All things being equal, I will buy local but that just doesn't happen very often. When my daughter needed a new viola, I shopped around. The local music shop wanted $1200 for the same viola that I found on Amazon for $240. Screw that! Just because someone is local doesn't mean they aren't a ****** trying to rip me off...

Supporting your LHBS really has nothing to do with limiting yourself to ingredients produced in the US. I try to buy from my local shops whenever I can, but I use plenty of imported malt and grains, because I want certain flavors. It’s not like Golden Promise is being manufactured in sweatshops by underpaid children.

There are a few supplies that are truly local/regional for me. I do live close to some major barley-producing areas. Rahr malt is produced in Shakopee, MN, and Briess is from Wisconsin. Aside from that, most everything else I buy is from elsewhere. I buy lots of European malts and hops, and so on and so forth...

I support my LHBS, local breweries every possible chance, local butcher shops, etc in an attempt to support the local economy but I buy grain according to the recipe as much as possible. That being said, if possible I get my hops from the hop farm down the road from me.

When you cook do you only use American spices? Only drink American coffee/tea? Cheese, chocolates...you get the idea ;)

Sure! I always buy local! That may include Salzgitter German Pilsner, Czech hops, German hops.... Uhh. Where do you think these products come from?….

I buy my supplies nearly exclusively from Texas based shops, and so should all of you. If those supplies are made in Texas or the USA, all the better.

i think budweiser buy's a lot of your rice for german lager too! (arsenic and all) :tank:

(and seriously, i was buying 25lb bags of rice from the super market to make rice beer for a while, alpha, gluco, dry hop...pretty good stuff!)

edit: i do get my gluco from brewhaus, in keller, TX! (yeah, yeah...And if they had to label it, it'd probably say made in china)

if thats what you like and arent up to trying new beers, sure. But why limit yourself to domestic grains ?
do you own an american cell phone and computer too? what car do you drive? your clothes?

Buying local vs buying domestic are two different things. I'd support a LHBS if there was one around as long as his prices were comparable to buying online w/shipping and his inventory was well stocked and fresh. I used to live 5 mins from a LHBS and it got so when I wanted something ,they were out of stock, it got to be a disappointment on a regular basis.

Actually i run a Supermicro MB, intel cpu...At least they're sorta us brands...lol, and when i had to replace the tires on my honda, i had them special order me Goodyears, (which the code on them says they were made in brazil, lol) i think that's an american brand, right?

i was thinking of trying a ford next car though, i've had this one since 2001...

And no, i don't care if you buy the king's malt, or hitler's.....

(DAMN, i couldn't find a malt bag with trump branding on it to post a pic of) :coff1:

If you're going to buy a new car, keep your domestic spending streak and buy a Toyota or Subaru. Definitely don't want to support those southern terrorist (Ford) anymore. : sarcasm:

lol, i thought that was GM?

I buy the best ingredients. I want to live in a world where that means I can source them locally. Furthermore, I’d like to live in a world where a member of my community crafted those ingredients.

Unfortunately that world doesn’t exist. I buy the best ingredients that I can source and I’m happy to get those ingredients from Germany and Belgium most of the time in order to do so. My brewing sugars are made in the US, and I guess I source my yeast from the US, but grains and hops are continental.

lol! finally...it's my turn to point out this is in the topic of 'drunken rambling and mindless mumbling'.. :D

this is not supposed to be serious. I avoid mexican food because i think their sadists, and i just had a taco at taco bell for some reason....

You need another beer, let me fill up your glass..with some "Brüt Farmhouse Full Flavor"! :cask: ;)

Brut Farmhouse Full Flavor sounds like a personal problem.

Appreciate the offer but you can keep that funky swill to yourself!

I try to support my LHBS whenever possible. It's easy because they're good people and their prices are competitive with online shops. I'll order online at times because it's not always convenient for me to get to my LHBS.

But the guy at the feed store wanted to try it! lol :mug:

True, but I buy the ingredients that I need to make the styles of beer that I want to make, and want to buy the best and highest-quality ingredients I can get. If those are American, great. If not, so be it.

All these lines on a map are irrelevant. I don't know the farmer in Nebraska just as I don't know the farmer in Alberta or in Bavaria, or in Chengdu for that matter. I think it's incumbent on me as a consumer to support the best product at the most reasonable price, not draw arbitrary distinctions that potentially give me lower value and worse beer than I could otherwise make.

What do Taco Bell and Mexican food have to do with one another? That's like going to Panda Express and thinking you're eating Chinese food.
