Hi, I'm planning on brewing a 3 gallon saison this week using the Omega Yeast OYL-500 Saisonstein Monster (for the first time) and I was wondering if a starter would be required or not, considering the batch size of only 3 gallons.

Thank's a lot!

A Saison is a yeast driven style, so given that, I personally wouldn't bother with a starter as I feel that you will be overpitching anyway. I like to ferment at the upper end of the temperature range(80+) to get the flavors that I want.

I also prefer the super/imperial Saisons (8-10%) as well, but that's just me, it is one of my favorite beer styles. I enjoy a table Saison, a standard strength, funky Saisons, and black Saisons as well.

good luck, enjoy

Let us know how it turns out.
