Do I just prefer high carbonation?

I've been noticing lately that I prefer most of the styles I've been brewing (pales, IPA's, ambers, etc) at about 2.7-2.8 volumes. That seems high to me per style guidelines that I've seen, but I find that while my beers are in the the process of carbing up, I'm disappointed in them, but as soon as they equalize at about 2.7-2.8 volumes, they suddenly seem complete to me. I'm at about a mile of elevation, so that means about 17psi at 38-39 degrees (admittedly a bit warm for serving ales), which equates to about 14.5 psi at sea level.

What are you guys carbing those styles to? Does 2.7-2.8 vols seem excessive? Just wondering if I have an unusual preference for high carbonation levels.

I tend to stay in the 2.2-2.6 vols. range for those types of beers.

But, that's just me. If you like them where you put them, that's what matters!

Carb them at a level that you like, since you're the one who will drink most of it. If you are submitting them to competitions and want to get high scores, then carb to style. If all you are looking for from competitions is feedback from trained tasters, then carb how you want, and ignore any comments about high carbonation (since that's what you intended.)

Definitely agree, I carb them that way to personal preference and will continue to. I'm entering a couple of them into a comp in February, so I'll be curious to see if I get any comments on carbonation.
 
I carb all mine at 12psi and I'm at sea level. I would prefer a bit higher like yourself but then I would have to get more beer line and I just don't want to mess with it.

Get perlick 650ss flow controll if u want 2 turn up the psi ...I donno maybe it will work?
 
I've been asking myself that question too, but I also might just have a poor basis for comparison. Plus my batches keep coming out a little low (seemingly) but I think that's a volume calculation thing...
