What do you all think I have a small chest freezer fermentation chamber and the space heater takes up too much room (can only get one bucket in so if I change the heat source I could get another in) so I was thinking of going with some flex watt stuff also the hair dryer could be a good option but my real question is:
Is it better to use direct heat to the fermenter or heat the air?

I like to heat the air- maybe less effective but also less costly method (I use light bulb in metal can, it is wired with PC fan on STC1000).

Using direct heat will change the temperature faster.... but you don't need to change the temperature of beer, just maintain the temp. I'd look for cheap instead of fast.

I have a brewbelt hanging loosely across 2 fermenting buckets. It puts out enough heat to keep a full upright freezer in the 50Fs out in a 30F detached garage.

I also have a fan in there to circulate the air evenly.
