I finally took the plunge into kegging and am about to keg my first batch. I thought I remember reading about people cutting off the end of their dip tube so you don't suck up any sediment off the bottom of the keg. I tried a search but couldn't find anything. Can someone enlighten me.

Normally when you keg, the first half pint is a yeasty mess. After that, it's all clear beer til the end.

Some people don't like that and trim 1/4" to 1/2" off of the bottom of the dip tube so as not to draw any of the settled yeast. However, realize that by trimming the bottom of the dip tube, you will ultimately leave more beer in the bottom of the keg (granted it's a small amount in the grand scheme of things).

One other thing, since you are just starting out kegging, try going the unaltered route to begin with. It works for lots of people and will probably work for you as well.
