So i'm rigging up a new 25 gallon kettle and found that with my dip tube i leave behind about a gallon of wort. I'm running 1/2" soft copper to a 1/2" SS ball valve. the tube is curving slowly down the to bottom and is resting at a slight (say 45 degree) angle to the bottom. It's running through a tea strainer to act as a hop blocker, but if that has to go to get me my extra wort it totally can.

Any thought on how to improve my wort collection would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!:mug:

5 ft and a pump can be used. due to the width of the pot, 1 gallon on the bottom is about 1/4" or less in depth....

Are you trying to get everything from the kettle? 1 gallon is only 5% of 20 gallons. Assuming you are shooting for 20 gallons to the fermenter. It is a loss. but not a huge one. I would just move the pick up tube lower if possible. you should be able to drain nearly everything from the kettle if your tube is low enough. Do you have any pics?

Its because you dont have a hose hooked up, you need the hose to be below the kettle to properly siphon.

Even with a hose or a pump if the 1/2" pick up tube is at an angle to the bottom it will suck air at the top of the opening. Can you make it a 90* bend or curve so that no part of the open end of the pick up tube is more than 1/8" from the bottom?

Try a 90 degree elbow on the inside. As long as you have space to attach it you should be able to get all but the last pint or so. Hose barb elbows also work pretty well

So I picked up a tubing bender and put a 90 degree bend in some 1/2" flex copper and bobs your uncle! I now only have about .25 liters left in the bottom of the kettle!
