Digging up a plant

I know this may be a strange question, but I have only enough room for 8 plants. Great Lake Hops were generous enough to give me one free Fuggle plant last winter. I planted it and it's been less than spectacular this year. I saw today that they had Cascade on their site and ordered one. I want to dig up the Fuggle and give it to a brewing friend. Is there anything I should know about digging up an active plant? I want it to be productive for him.

Take as big a root ball as you can manage...
