I have my second brew fermenting (English Pale Ale) and I noticed that there is a lot of action in the air lock. My first brew was a generic brown ale and there wasnt as much as much action in the air lock. Just wondering if different beers have different discharges? I plan to do a Hefe or a Wit next and want to know if I should have a type of air lock or use a blow off tube if that type of beer has a more violent fermenting process.

There are a ton of variables. Yeast viability, amount of yeast pitched, fermentation temperatures, types of yeast, etc. Maybe it's as simple as not having a good seal on your bucket lid.

I'd use a blowoff on your Hefe just to be sure, unless you are confident youhave enough headspace in your bucket.
