Did I over-hop?

So this was my first time attempting to dry-hop and I think I may overdone it judging my the aroma and bitterness.

Total hops were 1oz of Millenium for bitterness. .5oz at 60 min and then .5oz added continually up until 35 min.

1oz Simcoe at 10 minutes and 1oz of Amarillo at 10 minutes

Dry-hopping-I added 1oz each of Simcoe and Amarillo to the secondary for 7 days before bottling.

Excessive? It seems it now that I'm looking at it but at the time it seemed fine.
 
It just tastes far too citrusy to me. I think maybe it was the combination of the Simcoe and Amarillo both of which said they had citrus notes. Hopefully things mellow out with a little more time in the bottle.
 
The aroma will fade very quickly, which may make you a happy camper but it usually makes me a sad panda

I did an IPA with a large simcoe and amarillo DH that seemed way over the top. Great thing is, a couple of weeks later it was perfect. If it is too much, just give it a couple of weeks to mellow.
 
i will say i did a dipa with 1oz centennial and 2oz columbus. All i could taste was columbus, but maybe thats attributed to the hop, not the amount. People have said its easy to overdoit with columbus.
 
Depends on the body, I'd think. On most occasions you want to find a good balance between body and hopiness. The more malt, the more hops the beer could accept and have a good taste. Of course, it's all a personal taste call, but a thin beer with a lot of hops would be more bitter.

I'd say just make notes, if you don't like it the way it is, next time, adjust the amounts appropriately. If it is citrusy, then most likely it is the Simcoe. A very powerful hop, grapefruity, etc.

But the other poster is right, some of it will fall off over time and mellow out. If it's undrinkable for you right now, put it in the back of the fridge and let it sit for a month or two and revisit it.

I just saw something the other day that said for an IPA your IBU's should be about equal to your OG. I am going to attempt to follow this rule of thumb on my next IPA and see how it pans out...
 
Is this tasting it after 3 weeks being in bottles? I've had beers that I've dry hopped seem way too citrusy at bottling time, prime example was a Saison that just finished carbing up. Dry hopped with a half oz of Cascade, tasted like straight Cascade at bottling, but now it's just a supporting aroma to the funkiness of the yeast.

FWIW, I like dry hopping with at least 2 oz for all of my IPAs, even more for IIPAs.

i wouldnt say 'should'. I've done a couple with a 1:1 ratio and some where its 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and anywhere in between. It comes down to what you like. Do you like hop forward ipa's? Then you might want to shoot for something a little higher. Personally, i prefer a ratio of 1.2-1.3:1.
 
I use double that in my IPAs, triple that in my Double IPAs. It's safe to say you didn't over hop it.
 
I've over hopped and under mashed. Came out with a thin bitter pale ale. Finished the keg with my brothers in about 5 days.

It's a great learning experience. With enough wisdom ( timely application of knowledge), you make a mistake only once and your a better brewer because of it. Try telling a Canadien a beer is too bitter.

Every beer has a place and is appreciated in some culture, somewhere.
 
I don't think it's overhopped. Sounds just about right. I stick with a ratio of 1.3. I like it bitter and full of hop aroma and taste.

like i said, i saw something that said it "should be about equal", not equal. I have never paid attention and am going to guess i lean towards the slightly over hoped version of IPA's but I also am not crazy for a hop-bomb. I think that recommendation probably gives a well balanced IPA, probably a little more traditional....
