Hey there, first post.

So today a buddy and I started our first-ever homebrew. We used a True Brew brand IPA kit, and followed all instructions UNTIL -

- Killed the yeast with boiling water by accident. Realized this seconds later, and one of us ran off to the supply store to buy more.

Second disaster:

- Rubber stopper on Primary Fermenter bucket fell into the wort. Upon return with yeast, we fished around with spoons & strainers, trying unsuccessfully to retrieve it. Eventually, resorted to sanitizing right arm and retrieving it manually.

So... veterans. First impressions. How screwed is this batch?

Probably no screwed up at all.

As long as you sanitized everything well, the wait to get new yeast isn't a problem.

Sticking your hand in is a potentially a problem. Sanitizer doesn't work well on skin, but it's better than nothing. Chances are you'll be fine, and there really isn't anything you could do at this point anyway.

In the future, it's a good idea to keep a extra of all the little bits on hand. eg extra stoppers, tubing, airlocks etc. You are going to break/loose/drop all those eventually.

I've never pitched yeast into boiling wort before, so the most I can say is that the first yeast you pitched is most assuredly dead. It may or may not cause off flavors, but I've heard of similar situations in which the beer came out fine. The bucket grommet is no biggie. I once accidentally poured in my stir bar with my starter and retrieved it the same way. Beer came out just fine. Either way, it's out of your hands now so just see how it tastes when you check the gravity in a couple weeks.

Boiling water? Like roaring? If it was already in bucket with cooler water i doubt you killed it. Might have made it angry. Always good idea to have extra yeast though just incase. Remember yeast can take days ao dont freak out. Grommet thing...i do that time after time...everything is fine. I bet ya made that face right? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Im no veteran but i will say this i have done much worse! And it tasted great!

We drank more of our first batch tonight. Delicious Belgian. We made the same mistake..."Um, we're supposed to pitch the yeast AFTER adding cold water." Oops. Went and got more and repitched, it came out fine.
