Dear lady selling a half-finished kegorator conversion on Craiglist:

Thanks so much for responding promptly to my e-mail on Friday and offering to hold onto the project until this week. Thanks again for telling me "It's not a problem" because I couldn't get away from work to pick it up on Friday.

If "It's not a problem", then why, when I called you on Monday at lunchtime to arrange to pick it up, did you tell me "I just sold it to somebody else". Thanks a lot for keeping your word.

Thanks even more for telling me "I didn't say I'd keep it for you, just that it shouldn't be a problem." That really redeemed you in my opinion. Or not.

If the $35 half-converted Sanyo in Castle Rock CO went to somebody here, then cheers! I hope you enjoy it, and that it gives you many years of cold beer.

Craigslist is like that, I don't hold anything for anyone and sell to the first person who shows up with money, because people tend to flake out all the time.

If you're not going to hold it, that's cool, but don't tell people you might That's just being an a-hole.

For that reason, I am always very clear. First cash in hand takes it. If you even implied that you would hold it, you have made a commitment you need to keep.

Just in case that lady reads this: You are a dirtbag!

people even flake out on freecycle, and even if she said she would hold it at least you didnt find out after driving there.

she really didnt have any commitment to you selling it to you w/o any sort of deposit on it.

if i were in her shoes i would do the same, there is something i want to get rid of. first person at my door gets it.

Unless you paid for it, she has to sell it to the person there with the money...

Nuh-uh. she doesn't HAVE to do anything except be good for her word. She either needs to be honest out front and say that the first person to show up at her door gets it, or she needs to wait until the agreed-upon time. It may or may not be good business, but it is common courtesy. I would've reamed her a new one.

OMG yes...I have had so many flaky potential buyers, tons of tire-kickers with out cash and completely absurd trade/counter offers with craigslist to date that I have the same policy.

More malt! I need more malt!

Can't have the sweet without some bitter! Just think, when you do get your kegerator together, you can be like.....Suck it, Craigslist Lady! I have to agree though.....Craigslist can be a real shady deal....it makes me nervous having people come to my house....so I too, sell to the first person with the money.

I tend to ignore all Craigslist ads older than 36 hours because of that.

I agree with both sides, first to pay gets the item (and I expect the same to be true). At the same time, don't sell something if you can handle basic interaction with human beings (and keeping your word is very much "basic".)
