This is a double post along w/one in Beginners section.

Was looking at on-line recipes and played w/one in Beersmith.

What do you think? I'm off to Vegas in about a week for a week and think I'll do this when I get home.

Aloha, I found somewhere on TBT a recepe for a Cascadian Dark IPA. I tinkered w/it and came up w/this. If it works I'll call it West Side Dark IPA.

Extract w/steeping grains
6.6 lbs Dark LME
3.3 lbs Amber LME
.5 lbs Crystal Malt 80L
.5 lbs Victory Malt
.3 lbs Dark Wheat Malt
2 oz. Warrior hops (60 min)
1 oz. Simcoe hops (20 min)
.5 oz Cascade hops (0 min)
2 oz Cascade hops (last 3 days in primary)
1 pk SafAle S-04

Est OG=1.072
Est FG=1.019
Est ABV-7.04
Bitterness 56.6 IBU
Est Color 19.5 SRM

So what do you think? Should I try it?

Looks tasty to me. There's essentially two schools of thought on black/dark IPA's with the one being that they should taste and feel just like a regular IPA with just a little Carafa for darkness and a hint of roast, or they should be like a hopped up porter (e.g. Magic Hat's Demo). This certainly looks more like the second type but should be awesome. If you wanted it a little drier like an IPA maybe losing some of the wheat and/or extract and adding sugar would be an option, but this should be good as is.

Mahalo from Hawai`i. I'm gonna concider all the suggestions and perhaps adjust the recipe by the end of the month when I'll brew it.

thats much more an american stout or porter than a BIPA. Ditch the dark/amber extracts for light or extra light extract and steep in some carafa (~0.5-1lb) and you're good

I'm no expert but using Beersmith I pulled up an Imperial IPA and got some stats on the ranges that describe it.

I think all my numbers are good w/the exception of the color SRM.

theres alot more to style then just hitting the #s, cuz a few overlap. for instance, you also nailed american stout #s

Vital Statistics: OG: 1.050 – 1.075
IBUs: 35 – 75 FG: 1.010 – 1.022
SRM: 30 – 40 ABV: 5 – 7%

in general, if you are steeping grains already, its not advised to use dark extract because you have no idea what is actually in it. you're better off just using light or extra light and adding in the grains you want

Ok, I'll take your advise and switch to the pale. Thanks for the advise. I'm really just a nube :)

Taking Good Advice from dcp27 here is the updated recipe and changing name to West Side Black IPA.
Question Is this gonna be sweet w/that high FG?

Extract w/steeping grains
9 lbs Pale LME
.5 lbs Carafa III
.5 lbs Crystal Malt 80L
.5 lbs Victory Malt
2 oz. Warrior hops (60 min)
1 oz. Simcoe hops (20 min)
.5 oz Cascade hops (0 min)
2 oz Cascade hops (last 3 days in primary)
1 pk SafAle S-04

Est OG=1.066
Est FG=1.017
Est ABV-6.1
Bitterness 48 IBU
Est Color 29.5 SRM

its on the higher end for a IIPA, but if you bump up the IBUs it'll counter it for you or replace some of the extract with sugar to lower your FG. BTW, are you sure your IBUs are correct? even if this is a 2.5gal boil, you should at least be in the 60s by my calculation

Here is a screen capture from Beersmith.

If I increase hops to 2 oz the IBU's go up to 60.

thanks again.
