So, I have a dark brownstain in my airlock. the beer smells a little bit off as well, was wondering if this is a sign of infection. The only thing i can think of is this is the first time i have used honey in a brew, which was added to the boil at 15 mins to go. Other than that its a regular IPA (crystal and 2-row) It has only been fermenting for 3 days now, so ill let it go for the rest of the week and check it closer when i go to secondary

Probably just kicked up some of the yeast/krausen into the airlock. No biggie just pull it off clean and sanitize and reinstall. And depending on the yeast it can smell sweet and good or like ass but its still good. I wouldnt worry about an infection at this point.

sounds like a little krausen that got into the airlock. nothing unusual. just pull it out and clean it

thanks for the quick reply.

Im pretty sure the krausen didnt make it up that high, i dont see any stains in the carboy anyway. and it definately smells like ass. I guess onlytime will tell ill give it a taste when i rack then ill know for sure. Tried to add an image of the lock from my gallery but I dont think it is showing up :(

EDIT: fixed the pic :)

If you are going to rack to a secondary i would wait at least until 2 weeks have passed since you pitched before you rack it over. Give the yeast some time to do thier work before you move things around. Personally and after reading alot on here, I don't think a secondary is necessary unless you are dry hopping or adding fruit.

I add gelatin to most of my beers in the secondary, i guess thats the reason i still do it

And yea waiting an extra week would probably be a good move.
