I have a packet of Danstar Munich dry yeast which has an expiration date of March 2012. Am I still in a safe range to use this packet?

I know I probably should make a starter however if I just rehydrated it properly, do I still stand a good chance that ferment out a 1.050 wort?

Considering it's not March yet, I'd say you 're probably ok. I've used yeast well past the expiration myself. I'd suggest making a starter first, that way you'll know you have viable yeast.
