I feel like I've read every stirplate page on the internet and still can't figure this out. I guess I unnecessarily complicated things by getting a rocker switch that lights up, and by getting a jack for the power cord. Here's a picture of what I'm working with:

I'm not too experienced with electrical wiring so you'll need to keep it basic here. Super appreciative thanks in advance!

first what is that:

edit:

i think this will be close, could use a pic of the package or pn of the switch... you many have to play with the jack and the switch

I tried your suggestion but I'm still having some problems. I took some better pictures of the jack and the switch.

Here's the jack. I tested out the jack and fan by themselves and I can get the fan to run by attaching the red to the left and the black to the middle.

Here's the switch, with the black box opened.

If I try the same experiment with the jack and the switch, connected to the same terminals that made the fan run, I just get this dull glow in the switch. Edit: And it doesn't matter which way the switch is flipped - they both make it barely glow.

The packaging that each component came in will have a schematic for the component. If you can post those we can help. If you're not familiar with electronics and just want to assemble a proven design, buy these parts and assemble this. It's from Stirstarters.com and he provides this info on his website for those who want to build it themselves. For the pot, use you'll have to tie the middle leg to one of the outside ones. Test them both before soldering to find which configuration drops the resistance across the outside legs when you turn the knob the direction you want to turn the speed up.

ok, looking at this:

the light is set up to run off of 110 line voltage, the switch part will still work which is the two blade sticking out of the back. its not to say the light can not be made to work but that is beyond what i can talk you through over the web.

ok so what IrregularPulse said, but given the parts on hand try this:

also now that you got the fan to trun, try to add the pot and see if that works and go from there.

Got it! I actually had to make one modification from your drawing: the wire from the switch to the potentiometer had to connect to the right side.

Thank you so much.
