Culturing yeast from beer bottles

Hello I'm interested in trying to culture yeast from beer bottles. From what I've read online people use a little bit of wort or yeast nutrient. Is there any reason why you couldn't just use sugar water to grow a yeast culture?

Short answer: yeast needs things that are in wort.

Long answer: google yeast cannot live on sugar alone palmer
