Crowlers

So my local brewery is offering a limited release of a fantastic double red ale. That being said I wanted to attempt to save a little some how. My only options are crowlers or growlers. I have no experience with crowlers. How long can a beer stay fresh in one? Must it remain chilled? Any feed back would be helpful. Thanks all

The ones I have read about are basically 32 ounce cans that are filled on site. They purge the can with Co2 so once you open it you drink it. Keep it as long as you would a can of beer. Keeping it cold would be smart but I've taken cold beer warmed it up and then made it cold again with no real concern.
