Got this from averaging 25 IIPA recipes. Wondering if the hop profile would be balanced?

Ingredients:
------------
Amount Item Type % or IBU
14.50 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 85.3 %
0.50 lb Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 2.9 %
0.50 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain 2.9 %
0.50 lb Rye Malt (4.7 SRM) Grain 2.9 %
0.50 lb Victory Malt (25.0 SRM) Grain 2.9 %
2.00 oz Simcoe [13.00%] (60 min) Hops 70.6 IBU
0.65 oz Warrior [15.00%] (90 min) Hops 28.3 IBU
1.35 oz Cascade [5.50%] (20 min) Hops 12.2 IBU
1.00 oz Centennial [10.00%] (5 min) Hops 5.4 IBU
1.50 oz Glacier [5.60%] (Dry Hop 3 days) Hops -
0.50 lb Corn Sugar (Dextrose) (0.0 SRM) Sugar 2.9 %

I would consider adding one more addition of Cascades at Flame out. Another ounce.

It really adds a nice aroma quality to the beer. Turn off the heat, toss in the hops and chill. The oils will be released but not driven off by boiling or heat as you cool it quickly.

Or the short answer: "Because Yooper suggested it for IPAs and I do what the Lady says."

I don't know about Victory in an IIPA. I love it in a PA but I don't know if a bready or biscuit type flavor would be good in a IIPA. You could certainly get away with throwing another half pound of sugar in there if you want too.

Yeah I was thinking about that myself :D

Do you all think 2 oz of Simcoe at 60 mins would make it too joltingly bitter? Maybe reduce it down to 1.5 and up the cascade to 2 oz?

I say keep the victory and lose the rye (or increase it) and cara-pils. 3% rye won't do squat for you. Same with the c-pils. The c-40 for is OK for a little color but why the c-pils? Can't be for body because the sugar will negate that. What temp are you mashing at?

Like I said I this is the raw result of averaging 25 IIPA recipes.

How much to increase the rye to? 5%, 10%?

Carapils improves head right? At least that's what I thought?

Plan on mashing at 154F.

Most recent IIPA I made I mashed at 149, Id suggest going to 151 at the highest for the mash unless you want a sweeter and heavier bodied IIPA. I personally prefer mine a little bit drier.

I agree with mashing at 150ish. The last iipa I made I mashed at 149 and added 3/4 pound of sugar. It went from 1.088 to 1.013 in 7-8 days with 2 packs of us-05. It was the best iipa I've made in the past 3 years. My dad went from drinking michalob and brown ales to trying every ipa he can because of that beer.

For the hop schedule I think you need to balance your ibu's across your boil time better. If your shooting for a 100 ibu beer then I'd make your 90 min and 60 min additions 50-60 ibu's and make up the rest with larger late additions. My latest IIPA was 126 ibu's using 10 oz's of hops with 3 of those for dry hop. More warrior at 90 and 60 to get 50 to 60 ibu's then late addition the crap out if it with 20,15,10,5 and flameout additions of the simcoe, cent to get the rest. I'd save the cascade for the 5 and flameout. Dry hop for a week. It's a double ipa, can't be stingy on the hops.
Then again, this is just my opinion. Have fun and good luck.

Looks a lot better. An interestingly toasty/malty/rye-ish IIPA for sure. My .02: I'm a huge fan of massive fresh hop aroma, so I'd up the dry hopping to 4 oz, perhaps 10 days of glacier and 5 days of centennial. Centennial aroma is one of my favorite components in my IIPAs.

Looks much better, I'd drop the carapils to .5 so it finishes low. Still not sure about the rye but if you like that flavor then run with it.

Have a good brew day, man. Pitch a huge starter or 2 packs of dry yeast. Let is know how it turns out.

IIPAs are all about highlighting hops, IMHO. (well, maybe not so humble;)) Roasted, nutty, bitter, and spicy malts are not compatible with that.

Lose the victory and rye. Move some Simcoe to the flavor stage (<20 minutes). It's all about late hop additions or "hop bursting". It would be a shame, (IMHO) to waste all that Simcoe on bittering. That's what Warrier and Magnum are all about.

You can get some flavor out of the bittering hop by doing First Wort Hops (FWH). It does soften the bitterness a bit and supposedly puts some taste in, similar to a 20 minute addition.

I've been doing a recipe lately (IPA) that has all hop additions starting at 30 minutes or less. Means a lot of hops to get the IBUs where they should be, but man, is it tasty! Hops are cheap this year, though, so I say enjoy!

Oh, and I say don't dry hop with one hop. Use several. I've not used Glacier, but you will get more mileage mixing it with some of the flavor hops, or some Cascade. Don't be afraid of a week or more, also. Some of the best beers made have multiple dry hopping additions at different times. Me, I just throw some in a bag in the keg and leave them there! In about 3 weeks, it's ready!

Good luck with your brew!

Some changes, on the previous poster's advice just decided to go with pale malt and sugar for the fermentables and make the hop schedule more "forward heavy."

Amount Item Type % or IBU
15.50 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 93.9 %
1.00 lb Corn Sugar (Dextrose) (0.0 SRM) Sugar 6.1 %

0.75 oz Warrior [15.00%] (90 min) Hops 32.5 IBU
1.00 oz Simcoe [13.00%] (60 min) Hops 35.1 IBU
1.00 oz Centennial [10.00%] (20 min) Hops 16.4 IBU
1.50 oz Cascade [5.50%] (20 min) Hops 13.5 IBU
1.00 oz Simcoe [13.00%] (5 min) Hops 7.0 IBU
1.00 oz Centennial [10.00%] (5 min) Hops 5.4 IBU
1.50 oz Cascade [5.50%] (Dry Hop 10 days) Hops -
1.50 oz Centennial [10.00%] (Dry Hop 10 days) Hops -
1.50 oz Columbus (Tomahawk) [14.00%] (Dry Hop 10 dayHops -
1.50 oz Glacier [5.60%] (Dry Hop 10 days) Hops -
1.50 oz Simcoe [13.00%] (Dry Hop 10 days) Hops -

7.5oz for dry hops...mmmm mmmm!!! Wow!! :D I personally like a little maltiness backbone in my IPAs, ESPECIALLY in IIPAs. I don't think there's anything wrong with a little C-40, but it really sounds great as-is!

Agreed!

This will have an aroma you'd smell across the room! Just be aware all those hops will suck up a lot of beer!

When I was saying to mix hops for the dry hopping, I was actually thinking more like a couple of oz. total, BTW. But wow, could be a dynamite brew!:ban:

Anyone know a place that has ALL these hops in leaf form in stock right now? Freshops and hopsdirect are both out of warrior :/

Plan to use whole hops in twisty-tied coffee filters to avoid hop sludge.

You can just use more Simcoe for your 90 min addition. There's not a chance in hell you will be able to tell the difference with all of those late hop additions. Galena would be a good sub too if they have it in stock. I use Galena and Magnum interchangeably for bittering.

What a mess... don't do that! :) Why not pellets in some pantyhose? Works for me...
