One thing I am learning is that every beer you brew will have a crazy first week after pitching, and no two will be the same.

This time I have made an all grain blonde ale. I pitched saturday and today (tuesday) is the craziest day yet for krausen. Every other batch has been the next day usually.

I know nothings wrong with it, so Im not here to being worried that I have ruined it or anything. the bubbles are soo thick that they dont pop and force themselves all the way up to the airlock. Its pretty funny cuz I have large white bubbles pulsing with every bubble from my air lock like a heart beat.

So I have a blow off tube going now and cant make myself not sit and watch everytime a big bubble pops. better than watching tv lol

Better yet - stick your nose into the blow off bucket and smell the fruits of your labors..it's a wonderful, wonderful hobby.

Has anyone else had this same result from using WLP001 California Ale yeast? Im not kidding, this krausen is soo thick its like gel. I have had to replace my blow off tube due to it clogging as well lol.

Ok well the krausen has finally settled down a bit and isnt pushing to the top of my carboy anymore. But I should mention that it has a bit of "doughy" smell to it, mixed in with beer smell. It is very thick and traps bubbles, I really dont expect it to sink down to the bottom of my carboy.

any info?

:mug:all normal, WPL001 is pretty vigorous. If you patiently wait the three week rule you will find it settles out nicely. I have my AARP ale just finishing now, after pitching on 001 that was washed from using it on my Pliny clone. Both brews produced thick krausen much like you describe.:mug:

good to hear. This batch will be my first one to use my primary only, so it will get a chance to sit for 4 weeks. So it should have plenty of time to settle as you say. thanks
